Most miles until rebuild?
MY main question is whats the most amount of milage you can have before you get the rebuild? Anywayz, tommorow I will be removing the piper and checking my compressor wheel. If its siezed up then this weekend I will be getting new turbos..I will keep you guys posted ; )...

100k on mine
i have 98k on my stock engine and turbos. can't say they're in great shape, but i still get pretty decent power. Sometimes the secondary turbos dont come on, usually happens if i've used them too much and they are hot. if i let it cool down it comes back. i still get boost creep up to 13 psi.

I believe the I have been one of the lucky few to drive two '94 3rd gens to over 100K on the original engine and turbos. Both served as my daily driver, both were properly maintained and saw most (90%) of these miles on I-35 between Austin and San Antonio. Normal wear took its eventual toll and low compression and hard hot starting served warning of the eventual demise of these engines. Both turbos worked fine until the engines expired but big cracks around the wastegate put them in the bone pile.

If you drive interstate a lot and dont get into the boost much they will last. The problem is VERY VERY VERY few FD's are without boost haha.
One of the main problem with rotary engines is the apex seals start to get brittle around 50K miles. The more power you make the more chamber pressure you have the more likely you are to break a seal....even without detonation. A brittle seal can only handle so much before it snaps.

I remember a guy up in maryland I use to see at some of the meets up there had around 120k on the original motor. It didnt last much longer after that though.

A local guy I know, Stefan aka "150kFd" on the forum, has 160K+ original miles on his motor (hence his screen name). The turbos have been rebuilt, however. And, believe it or not, he still runs the stock pre-cat! Only mod is a catback exhaust. He's been able to reach that kind of mileage successfully because most of those miles are freeway miles - he drives that car all over the country.

I think if you keep your engine stock and take care of it well the TYPICAL engine life I have notices is around 90K. This is just for the FD of course.
My first engine, turbo and tranny went out at just over 95K and was replaced under the factory 100K warranty. I'm at 146K now and the factory reman and second turbo is still going strong even after MANY track days. The tranny is starting to make some discouraging noises. Guess I got a lucky with my reman as some are total duds in my understanding.
I know plenty of earlier non turbo model RX7s that have gone over 200K on the original motor.

93K until I blew the original AST and overheated the engine. Shoulda gotten an aluminum one. All the apex seals were in great shape and it was getting good compression. I could see a well maintained STOCK rotary breaking 100K. anyhow just 2 cents.
