Oh, what a beautiful car, 2nd best looking next to the 93 CYM if you can find a clean one. IMO

Yeah I'd like to see some pics of the Spirit R (maybe the official site too?). Here's the official Type RZ site (you can use Altavista to translate parts of the page) <http://www.mazda.co.jp/history/Archi...rx7.200010/rz/> This car is pretty tight. I also heard that the Type RS is actually better than the Type R Bathurst.

Mine is the Chaste/Pearl white and it's a Touring model. Factory bose, fog, rwiper,leather and contoured tinted glass sliding moonroof. I've only seen 3 of these with a glass moonroof, including mine.

Yeah I would have to say White is my most desirable model in PEP form without the Bose crap. I looked for about a year and a half befor i found mine. I would rather have it than CYM IMO. There are pics of it in the gallery if you want to see. Just do member serch for PureMdMa. I do wish i had a glass sunroof too though.

I'd like to see some pics of this convertible. I definitely like the new Spirit R. They've got pics and a screensaver on www.rx-7.mazda.co.jp

damn this is the first ive heard of the 2001 FD convertible edition cars. If anyone can give me some more info on them i would be very grateful. Or if anyone has any pics that would be great too. Now were these mazda manufactured or were they customer customizations becuase i have seen a couple that were after market convertibles.

The FD doesn't easily become a convertible. The ones that have been converted required additional supports(read: extra weight) for stiffening as it was never intended to be a convertible.

I'm starting to think I imagined this! Trouble is, I can SEE the press release in my mind...
I've emailed Mazda to see whether they made such an announcement or not, and whether they actually went through with the run...
I'll let you know when I hear back from them..
Cheers,
Dave

Hell No!! The Aus spec SP's aren't that great. For starters they look like ****...they have rear spoilers on them that look like hyundai excel rice warrior wings. Their front ends are also more squared like the FC. I personally hate them. A quick AUS internet search brought up half a dozen sellers, they're not hard to come by.

MAVrick - Are you telling me you base your entire judgement on how "great" a car is by how it looks? Aah, so you'd be one of those people that thinks a Hyundai Excel with a nice bodykit is an awesome car huh? ![Wink](https://www.rx7club.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Up until Japan started building 206+ KW models in 1999, the SP was THE fastest production rotary in the world. In fact much of the '99 model was inspired by the SP. Even the nose cone on the '99 is remarkably similar in functional design. And look - they switched to a raised rear wing too! (Admittedly the '99 wing looks loads better than the SP)
I agree with you that the SP rear spoiler is not terribly attractive. However it is functional. In designing and testing the SP a few different spoiler setups were tested. The high rear wing that was chosen allowed for the highest speed through corners. The nose cone I think looks better than a standard FD and IMO the vented bonnet is better looking that any other aftermarket hood I've ever seen. Even after 18 months of owning an SP the whole front end of the car gets me seriously horny! (Figuratively speaking)
There are inseed several SP's up for sale at the moment. Since long before I owned one I've been watching for whenever one gets advertised. It's uncommon that one is for sale, rare that 2 are, and this is the first time I have ever seen this many for sale at once. Only 35 of these were ever built (an initial batch of 25, then another batch of 10 when the SP had racing success). That alone shows that they are a rare car and generally fairly "hard to come by".
The SP was specifically designed to beat the Porsche 911 RSCS on the racetrack (12 hour endurance race at Eastern Creek). For those who don't know about the car, here's a brief rundown on the more significant changes:
* Carbon fibre nose cone with larger intake apertures
* Larger intercooler mounted just behind the radiator and with carbon fibre ducting funneling more air to it
* Carbon fibre airbox
* 3" exhaust
* 319mm brake discs
* Intercooler water spray
* Vented bonnet
* 110 litre carbon fibre fuel tank
* High rear wing (more carbon fibre)
* Optional lightweight Recaro seats
* 17" rims (8" front with 235/45, 8.5" rear with 255/40)
* Weight down to 1218kg (2680lb)
The SP did indeed whip the Porsche at Eastern Creek. In fact it did it again in 1999 in the 2 hour showroom showdown at Bathurst. As well as beating the 911 RSCS there it also beat the likes of the Ferrari F355, Toyota Supra, Skyline GTR, WRX STi, EVO, etc.
When the car came out in 1995 all the major motoring mags here did a comparo between the RX-7 SP, 911 RSCS and M3-R. All of them agreed that the 911 was slightly more brutal in a straight line and possibly the car to put your money on for the upcoming 12 hour race (they were proven wrong of course), but the SP was definitely the best of the bunch to have in your garage. As well as having awesome performance to better the M3-R and challenge the 911, it still came with (and raced with!) the full complement of luxuries (aircon, sunroof, CD, power everything, etc) which had been stripped from the others.
So even if you don't like the look of the body kit that's on the SP, all of the above still adds up to say it's a pretty f'ckin great car!!
