You should be able to shift with 2 fingers pinching the shifter. There is no reason to grab or force the shifter into or out of gear. There is also no reason to get a torque brace. More is not better. More is just more. If youre missing gears because your drivetrain is sloppy then get new engine mounts. And, if your engine didnt explode then it is fine. The clutch did its job.

The problem that most people have is that they hold the gear shift from the back, like a gun. If you are holding it like a gun, you can't direct it properly and that causes a lot of mis-shifts. Probably 90% of the people I've seen driving manuals hold the gear shift that way. On most cars, like a Honda Civic, it's not really an issue. People need to grab the shifter more at the top. It gives better control.
There is a diagram floating around on the web of the way to use your hand to put the car into each gear. There is also a YouTube video of someone demonstrating it. Now, I don't necessarily suggest people shift that way. I tried it years ago and it felt just too darn awkward. But at least getting the hand in the right position to shift is important.

I was never taught or even gave much thought to proper hand position on the shift ****. I should have started driving a stick from the very beginning..
I know the Z took some more coaxing to get it into a gear and it had a loose shift **** that would come loose on me during shifts and spin a bit.
Maybe thats why i grip and shift too harshly..?
I've driven stick for about 3k mi total now so its still a learning process for me. I'll try and guide it into gears for now on rather then push it into them.

I shift with my palm resting on the top of the shift ****. Easing in to the gears is a good method regardless of whether your synchros are working well or not. I work on being smoother, on and off the track. Lightning fast motions alone mean nothing if you're upsetting the balance, missing shifts, etc.
