Miata Thermoswitch Mod

I did the Mod. Here's what you need.

You need the Miata Thermoswitch. I got mine from PartsAmerica.com, it was a Beck/Arnley #2011621 and cost $26.99.

The electrical connector on the Miata thermoswitch is different than the thermoswitch electrical connector on the RX7, so that also needs to be changed. Go to your local pull-it-yourself salvage yard and get the thermoswitch electrical connector from a 90's Ford Probe (Mazda engine). If you're not sure how to identify the correct connector on the Probe, then purchase the Miata thermoswitch first and take it with you to the salvage yard. Then simple find the electrical connector that fits the switch. DO NOT get the thermoswitch from the Probe since it is NOT the lower temperature Miata thermoswitch.

The thermoswitch on your RX7 is behind the thermostat housing and is the lower, black color switch. It is difficult to get to. I had to remove the alternator to get at it. Remove and replace the thermoswitch. Remove and replace the electrical connector. The work space is very tight so be patient.

This is a worthwhile mod.

You beat me too it,you can also use the thermoswitch connector from a early 90,s Mazda 626 its just like the one in the Probe basically they are the same car with the same Mazda motor.Strange thing is my thermoswitch when it gets up to temp is shuting off the fans at 200F instead of 194F?I have a digital guage so I can check my temps.

The connector that I pulled from a 626 only has one blue wire as opposed to the connector thats currently on car with two. Do I splice it into both wires or just one of them? Thanks for the help in advanced...

Talk to Ray Crowe, he'll hook you up with exactly what you need.

I plan on doing the mod as soon as I get the parts. Call the number above if you need any part help.

Miata switch works well in most cases. A quick test is to ground the lead to the switch, with ign key 'on'. Fans should come on. If not, fans still will not come on 'till 221F, even with 207F miata switch. May be just a later model issue.

I'm talking to Ray right now and he seems to think that an extra electrical connector is NOT needed.

I just used a simple spade connector on mine rather than bother to go to the junkyard. It's simple.

Do you happen to have a write up on that (or a short explenation)? I've haven't really messed with electronics before. Just basic soldering.

Then you're all set. The Miata thermoswitch just has a single small metal tab that a spade lug can slip onto. I cut off my old connector, crimped on a small spade lug and slipped it right into the Miata part. Piece of cake. The spade lug itself is tight enough not to fall off, no need for a true locking factory connector (though it would be preferable).
