Massive Wheel Hop

A few days ago I went to the track to see what my car could run in the quarter mile. I have always had the problem of wheel hop but it only occured once in a while. At the track every single time I launched the car I got sick wheel hop, so bad that I ran a 14.3, and as my best run I ran a 13.4. Anyway so before I would have splattered my diff all over the track I decided to go home. I read up on the forum about wheel hop and read that the rear suspension, toe link, trailing arms, and tires all have something to do with it.
I next went to M2's website and found this writtin under the trailing arms:
"NOTE: Flex in the rear suspension acts to store the torque applied to the wheels upon acceleration. This suspension flex is the main culprit in causing damaging wheel hop during drag-type launches. Use of the M2 Competition Trailing Arms and Toe Links has proven extremely successful in greatly reducing or eliminating wheel hop. This is as a result of replacing the OEM rubber bushings with the solid heim joints in the M2 arms. This allows for direct application of power from the differential to the wheels without the suspension alternately storing and discharging the force to wheels promoting wheel hop."

If i just got the trailing arms would that solve my problem? Has anyone ever had the problem and got M2 trailing arms, what was the outcome?

Thanks for any responces....

I installed a set of M2 trailing arms on another FD. They work pretty well with eliminating wheel hop. Installation is pretty easy as long as you get them adjusted to the right length before putting them in. If the wheels ever hop after that, its just a little bit, unlike the monstrous kangaroo bounces that occur on the stock bushings.

BTW, I recommend doing the toe links at the same time. Its not a very tough installation but it makes things easier to go ahead and get done while you're putting attention towards that part of the car.

But the question is what tire pressure did you lower it too? When I go to the track I lower it between 14 & 20psi on stock tires. That in combination with a torque brace solves the wheel hop problem. I dont think those toe links are necessary!

Wheel size is going to play into this as well. 16's will hop less than 18's do to the tire sidewall flexing/absorbing properties too. I'm pretty sick of wheel hop myself, so it looks like I'll be doing the toe links and trailing arms soon too

I reduced my wheel hop with a set of springs/shocks, rear sway bar and pettits toe adjustment linkage. Trailing arm linkage is my next mod to the rear end. hopefully i have fixed the dreaded wheel hop.

Trailing arms alone cured by wheel hop problem 99%.

Even with racing beat lowering springs the car had huge hop problems.

Now I can lay a nice patch of rubber from a standstill no problem.

Spinning the tires once rolling, ie. 40+mph in 2nd ==> 60 mph has never been associated with wheel hop.

When I use my engine torque reaction strut (brace) there is zero wheel hop.

Toe links did not decrease wheel hop in my mind.

The diff bushings made a small improvement, but my stock diff bushings were in decent shape.

Check out the Rotary Extreme Trailing Arms and Toe Rods at this link. Chuck makes an excellent product.

http://www.rotaryextreme.com/rod.html

I ordered a set of the Performance Trailing Arms and am anxious to see how much they help.

So pretty much the trailing arms and torque brace will solve the problem...

I have the trailing arms, ETB, Eibach Springs and Tokicos 5-way struts and have no wheel hop. Since they were all done except the ETB together, I can't tell you which one (if any single one) was responsible for the elimnation but ttogether they did it.

I have all the upgrades in the rear suspension--trailing arms, toe link arms, bushings in a-arms & diff, sway bar, coilovers, struts need PPF & torqe brace

the best thing ive done to reduce the wheel hop in my experience is to stiffen up the rebound/comp in the struts of course they have to be adjustable and dont lower too far, keep some suspension travel and of course lower tire press

when my struts were stock and i had lowered springs it felt like the stock struts wouldnt dampen the higher rate springs good enough and then the suspension would bottom out resulting in wheel hop and the toe links or trailing arm didnt help in my case my rear bumpstops were almost gone from bottoming out

hmm lets see i have

pettit launch kit, trailing arms and toe links
solid tranny brace *similar to a FC tranny mount*
300M axles
TII clutch LSD

two parts waiting to be installed are a diff brace and subframe braces.

i haven't broken anything in a while and my wheel hop is basically gone. the pettit launch kit helped a little. installing better diff bushings will also help alot. i am still running the stock bushings for now

I too had bad wheel hop...I put on a set of ET streets and the car has not wheel hopped once. I launch the car between 5500 and 6000 RPMs. All the car does is squat and go. My worst 60' since I installed them has been a 1.94. So my suggestion would be get a set of ET streets on your stock wheels and see if that solves the problem

Good Luck....
