Richard from Aquamist says to NEVER run washer fluid in the Aquamist system. In addition to methanol, it also has soap in it which will clog the tiny in-line filters and render the system useless. This happened to me which is the only reason I know of the issue. The filters are made of a very fine mesh and less than 1/4 inch wide so it doesn't take much to goop them up. And the soap in washer fluid will do it.

Thanks for the information. However couldn't this depend on the type because there are some that are made for winter, some for bugs etc etc.

Possibly, but Richard said not to use any of it, period. Based on this, I have to rethink my custom made tank as it currently is used for both washer fluid and for the water injection system.

If you put a mix of 50% water, 50% methanol, wouldn't that work fine for washing your windshield? haha!

A lot of car dealerships up here buy drums of methanol and mix it with tap water only to make their windshield washer fluid.

Just bought the 4-120 system for my FD, as my goals are somewhat more humble than many participating in this thread.

My FD is a single turbo autox and track car. It currently makes 350 RWHP, and ultimately should be close to 400. I will be injecting water only, for a number of reasons.

This is certainly feasible without AI, but I want it for the same reasons you do: insurance against detonation, keep the internals clean.

The Coolingmist system is $350 right now, which is $250 less than it was a few weeks ago.

Good news! The summer CAN be used by itself, I ordered one and will use the 0-5V summed output to drive the varicool controller. This way I will have a water injection system that follows injector duty for a lot less money!

Down the line I can upgrade and get either an aquamist or coolingmist high speed valve and will have the complete high pressure high speed setup but for now I'm keeping cost down.

Why do you need a summer anyway?

Can't you simply rig the system up to the primaries? I thought the ratio between the primary and secondary duty-cycle would stay relatively even.

For what im doing I need a 0-5V injector duty signal, so I either needed am's fia2 injector pwm reader or the summer to be able to get the 0-5V output. They are about the same price so I opted for the summer becasue of real injector duty from both pri and sec injectors.

The primaries go to about 40-50% duty then drop sharply to 25% and ramp up again with the secondaries that just started spraying at that point so reading the primaries only will not work. Reading the secondaries only with the fia2 pwm reader is somewhat ok but will only trigger water injection above 25% fuel injector duty; the summer gives you complete injector duty range.

neit jnf is correct.

the bottom line is you need the summation of the primary and secondary output/duty to match base fuel. if you have a PFC and Datalogit just post a chart on the two injector voltages and you will soon see referencing off one won't cut it.

The summer is critical for the FD. No way around it to get a true HD W/A setup.

I mentioned washer fluid just in reference to alcohol content. In retrospect it was a bad reference. I wouldn't use it in my engine either, but I would mix water and methanol at 20%.

welcome Richard. by way of introduction, perhaps no one has contributed more to the advancement of AI than Richard and Aquamist. Aquamist started making water AI systems for no less than the WRC... World Rally Cars. (BTW, those guys are crazy)... engineering on par w F1.

Richard is a major figure on many of the boards and has tirelessly shared his expertise.

in addition, Aquamist has maintained, when not down from being hacked, one of the two deepest forums on the net. i referred to it along w the turbobuick forum in my opening post.

Aquamist is no stranger to the FD having designed a "summer" module that works off our injector duty cycle. as such, it clearly falls into the 21st century "HD" AI category.

all AI system vendors are encouraged to post here and i welcome Richard and have great expectations for what is around the AQ corner productwise... based on their prior and present AI offerings.

Howard,

Found my way here at last with your cryptic clue! Thank you for the over-generous introduction. Where did you find all those energies from? you must be replacing a dozen keyboards each week.

1) Will the 2D kit be sufficient for 400-450whp? People keep saying 400whp, but I may be as high as 450whp at times.

2) Can the AQ summer be bought separately and used with the Aquamist 2D kit?

3) Would the 2D kit benefit from a different nozzle that sprays a finer mist?

4) What is the 'best' (finest spraying) nozzle capable of supplying enough water/meth for 400whp and operating on the Aquamist 2D pump? Where can I get it?

Anwering to your questions:

1. The 2D will not be sufficient for your application with 50:50. I have learnt that the sfc of the rotary engine is about 30% higher the conventional engine. The 2d is only capable of 300cc/min. You will probably need 4/5L of fuel to sustain 450whp. I am only guessing, so don't quote me. Assuming you want to run 20% of M50:W50 to fuel, you need to flow about a 800cc to 1000cc/min.

2. The summer is a separate item to the 2d. But since the 2d is no good for your application, question is a non-starter.

3. All our nozzles should prform well over 60psi. too fine a droplet size may not be good for all-round performance. I believe an ideal nozzle should deliver to variety of droplet sizes to accommondate an even spread of evaporation rate during its travel towards the manifold. There are different types of nozzle available: full cone, half cone and hollow cone. I personally prefer the semi and full cone. Hollow cone nozzles seemed to have a very consistant droplet sizes. Other WI makers have different ideas about thier nozzle preference. Ask as many advice as possible.

4. I think I have answered most of your question above. You should be be using the 2d system.

Try to select a system that uses PWM valve/constant pressure to control flow instead of progressive pump speed sysrtem. PPS system tends to have large droplet at low flow and too fine a mist at high flow. It is opposite to my view of consistent evaporation rate. Do not be confused with varied droplet-size nozzle I mentioned earlier.

bump for great justice and rotary engine reliability!

anyone interested in an excellent description of the fundamental types of AI systems should give the following a read.

If I can expect a kit like that, I would wait for it instead of trying to make a custom tank in the spare tire bin."

"I'm interested in the dual fuel cell as well. I went the same route as the pic above as far as removing the stock tank and deck. I'll be needing a setup with enough capacity for driving moderate distances without having to refuel. What size dual fuel cell would fit with it mounted under the carpeted area?"

let's call it a dual cell or DC i will get back to all on this by friday.

We've been running more or less this set up for the past year.... works great. The stock floor/spare tub was removed and an aluminum floor pan was put in its place. Hanger brackets hold an aluminum fuel cell and the methanol cell side by side. Only the filler caps are visible when the carpet is lifted up, other than the venting lines.
This pic doesn't show much for the set up, rather what you see when you open the hatch.

i am sure a bunch of us would appreciate some further info re your two "fuel cells." 'sounds like the way to go for the higher hp FD.

Wow. Awesome info. I've been through the whole thread and I'm amazed. I'm sure a LOT of us will be out buying water injection kids after reading this. You should ask AI systems sellers to pay you for that

I have a quick question. I live in canada, where it gets real cold in winter. However, I never drive my rx7 below 0C, because it's stored at that time of the year, so water freezing won't be a problem while I drive the car. I want to run water only, but I wondered if the pump / nozzle will get damaged if the water freezes inside of it, while the car is stored. If so, I was thinking I could add methanol in it to keep it from freezing when stored. What would be a good ratio to keep the mix from freezing at temperatures around -30C AND keep it non-flammable?
