M2 vs Rotary Extreme intake

Hello,

I have done a TON of reading on this forum on intakes. Options I am considering are Apexi w/ custom shielding, M2, and Rotary Extreme.

My first stage of mods will be intake, DP, PFC, and catback. Eventually I'd like to get the Vmount IC/rad assuming the price doesn't go up from the currently steep $2300. So I want an intake that works well w/ my current setup as well as with the Vmount.

What I am leaning towards is Rotary Extreme. RE has 2 versions: one that works w/ stock IC/rad setup, and another that works w/ Vmount. Chuck at RE said he'd be kind enough to upgrade my intake at no charge should I decide to go Vmount later down the road. His responsive customer service is making me want to go this route (M2 has great products but I have dealt with them on my previous 3rd gen and waiting for their products to be delivered is a nightmare).

My question is this: has anyone actually had 1st hand experience with the RE intake? Would I be giving up anything going with that over the M2 design other than slightly more weight? Might the flow be more or less restrictive?

Another thread debated back and forth about the best intake, and seemed to conclude the M2 is the best CAI and Apexi is the best HAI. I'm wondering if RE was not mentioned because less people know about it. Anway, it seems agreed upon that the Apexi flows the best but the drawback is it's hot air. What about the Apex'i with some sort of custom shielding similar to what Damien fabricated in the following thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...s&pagenumber=2

Might that truly be the best configuration assuming the shielding is properly designed?

Thanks,
Tony Alvarez

The apexi intake won't let you upgrade to most SMICs.

The M2, rx7fashion, rotary extreme, and CWC intakes are all basically the same design. I sincerely doubt one works much differently from any of the others. I CAN tell you that the rx7fashion box is very well made and you won't have to wait 2 months for it. By all accounts, Chuck at Rotary Extreme is a great guy and I'm sure his intake is also very high quality. I have seen the V-mount in person and it is fabulous engineering and quality.

Rynberg,

Thanks for your input. I've heard the same thing about his Vmount setup plus Chuck seems to really stand behind his products.

As a side note, I should probably clarify one thing I said in my original post when I said $2300 for the Vmount is steep. I meant steep relative to what I can afford. The price seems reasonable all things considered.

zeravla: There is no question, get the RE. Who else will upgrade for free if you go v-mount (which I can recommend from my experience)? It is a very high quality unit. Chuck is great when it comes to stuff like this. Nobody else would do it. Tom

You guys are making my decision much easier

Tgriesel, just curious... you sig says you're making 266 rwhp. Is this prior to your current mods? I'd expect you'd be around 320 rwhp assuming it's properly tuned and running right.

Tony: That was on a mustang dyno which runs about 15% less than a dynojet. That would put me just over 300 rwhp. I still run the stock cat at the moment and that is the limiting factor. M2 ecu's are set up to run with a margin of safely on the 91 octane gas we're stuck with here in CA. A Power FC and midpipe are next on the list. Tom

Ok, I wasn't aware of the different dyno ratings. Thanks for clearing it up.

Just so you know, the rotary extreme and rx7 fashion units are virtually identical, as they were pioneered by the same person. Chuck used to own rx7fashion, and now rotary extreme. Granted they're both M2 clones/copies, they are still nice units for the price. I had a couple issues with my RE CAI but Chuck took care of it right quick. Chuck is a good guy, a little busy at times but I think he has better customer service than most vendors, plus he offers more parts and, IMHO, is a little more motivated.

I'm sold!

Thanks to all of you who took the time to respond. I've decided to go with the RE intake.
