you will never get the airflow from the airbox that you get from 3 seperate filters like the aftermarket kits give you. the additional surface area guarantees it i'd think...

besides which the stock box is useless once you get a decent size intercooler...

$500 is kinda outrageous for what you get, though i guess there just isn't enough suppliers of them...

Way better!!

K&N Stock replacement filter $40
Cheap airbox mod .............. $80
peformance like the high priced intakes.....priceless!!

Well, actually, it's only $3000 right now, with the intake and mini-batt box.

The PFS is working very well for me right now. I'm sure if I was boosting 14 psi daily, it would probably show it's limitations.

I had to lower my boost controller a LOT in order to maintain boost at 10 psi, so it's obviously flowing a lot more air. I just dynoed 231 rwhp on a Mustang dyno, which should equal 255-265 rwhp on a Dynojet. On the Dynojet, I previously hit 240 rwhp with just the downpipe and cat-back, so I gained 15-25 rwhp from adding the PFS IC and intake AT STOCK BOOST. Because of the "ram air" nature of the intake and IC, I would expect more of a gain on the street.

The PFS stuff fits OK, it's kind of a pain in the *** to get everything lined up. I have a Fluidyne and the upper radiator hose pushes up the intake a little bit so the very front corner of the intake is rubbing my hood slightly. Not a big deal. PM me if you want more info.

BTW, in the 3rd Gen Parts forum, there's a PFS IC and intake combo for sale (ApexKW), as well as just the IC (Ralleymonkey). Both are set at pretty decent prices.

OK, this is nitpicking but...

The only way you will see any benefits from a "ram air effect" is if the intake is a true ram-air system. The intake system itself must be completely sealed, and must have a smooth, straightest-possible intake runner gulping a direct flow of air from an aerodynamically high pressure point on the car. The intake nacelle on the FD (where the radiator sits) is not completely sealed, nor are the oil cooler nacelles.

That said, any type of fresh airflow is better than nothing.

Yep.

This is why I put "ram air" into quotes. You do get a LOT more air while moving though. I currently have my boost controller set to 10 psi and I hold that until 7k rpm or so, where it drops to 9 psi by redline. On the dyno, it dropped to 9 much earlier and was down to 7-8 by 7.5k when the operator let off. And this is with some very powerful fans blowing into the bumper opening. I think this pretty conclusively shows that the intake gets a lot more air in motion.

Your point (and my nitpicking) are taken.

Question: Does the ECU reduce boost levels when it senses intake temps getting too high? Or does it just dial back ignition timing? Or nothing?

Well, my ecu no longer controls my boost levels....

I believe the stock ecu adjusts fuel and ignition timing maps depending on water, fuel, AND intake air temps.

so the PFS system is better than the stock box? better than the M2? (just the induction kit, not the IC)

I don't think it's better than the modified stock box, if the stock box will fit with your application (stock, or small stock mount intercooler). Just my opinion.

I totally agree. Adamc and Zerobanger have convinced me that an opened up stock box is probably the best intake you can have. It just limits you to a very small intercooler......

Over 700 views and 64 replies later, I think I will be sticking with my stock airbox and adding some more air ducting to it.
