Long drive checklist...

ill be driving 3 hours on Rt. 68 to WV.
this is what im going to do:
-check air in the tires
-oil (it was changed about a month ago, little miles)

what else? please and thank you...

Check your coolant, brake/clutch fluid and check the engine belt. Other than that, you should be fine. If you havent changed your spark plugs, it wouldnt be a bad idea to do so now to get the best gas mileage you can.

Three hours?! Come on, you consider that a long drive? I don't think too much is necessary for a three hour drive. If you were going like across country that would be a different story. You should be fine, check your coolant maybe.

Check the tire pressure in the spare. A flat spare tire is no use.

check spare tire

check all fluids, it wouldnt hurt to carry extra fluids too, like coolant/water

bring AAA card just in case

3 hours = long drive? I drove 18 hours in one day.. from Ohio to Wisconsin and back. A little over 1000 miles.. FD loved it.

check tires and fluids. you may want to check for a good rotary shop in the area your going just in case you need to be towed.

What the hell is wrong with you guys? This is a CAR. It's a bloody 3-hour drive!

Check the tires and oil (something you should do regularly anyway) and drive. Jeez.

3 HOURS????? You're kidding right?

Maybe a 3 hour track engagement would require this level of panic but a properly maintained 3rd gen should always be capable of a spur of the moment 3 - 6 hour cruise (assuming round trip).

Now if you are being a bad boyfriend to your 7, then you should do all the maintenance stuff and more before going out of the driveway.

if you dont know...what should you do? try or ask what to do...ill save money and just ask...

oh and what should i do about my cruze control?
it does not work anymore...any ideas?

Yes, but use a little common sense (not to mention the search function!). It's a CAR. Some of us (me included) beat the hell out of the car on the track for 2+ hours during a track day and THEN drive 4+ hours home.

A car experiences very little wear during highway driving, much less than city driving. Just check the basics like you would in ANY car and you'll be fine.

Does the cruise indicator light still come on? Have you checked to see if the CC motor is still connected to the throttle cable/body?

Do your brake lights still work when you hit the brakes? If your brake switch is broken, the cruise control will not engage.

ok ok its not a long drive...

yeah, the curise indicator light still comes on but it does not "catch" or whatever. the break lights work fine. how and where do i check that curise control motor?

The CC motor is mounted on the driver's side fender behind the shock tower. There is a connection between the motor and the throttle cable/body, it crosses over right below the intake elbow (from memory).

You should really get a FSM (factory service manual). You can even download a scanned version for free from www.iluvmyrx7.com

i guess it is better to be safe than sorry. sounds like you have a low mileage car. take good care of her.


the cruise control motor sits in the engine bay right behind the driver's side shock tower. from the top it looks like a rectangular shape with a metal lid with a black plastic round thing on top that has a cable coming out of it (think a bicycle brake cable). Follow the path of the cable toward the passenger side and it should be attached to the throttle body at a little semi-circular kinda thing that moves.

Check to see if it is attached or just hanging loose.

Also check out the Region specific forum for your area for a good rotary specialist. if you can't seem to find the problem, look them up. Dealers are horrible with RX7s.
