listen to this $hit!!!!

Ok I have my car towed to a bodyshop because I had some front end damage. The air filter was off and everything so I stuck a rag in in the hole. At the body shop they started the car and I guess the rag got sucked up into the engine. Bye Bye motor. Well the shop guy told the ins comp it was a result of the front end damage so they will pay for it. My question is should I go for a reman or rebulid mine and get it ported? My engine has about 45000 on it. Do you think the ins company will allow me to just rebulid my eng?
I would think that my eng whould be better than a reman because it only has 45k on it.
Also I live in san diego, CA who do you guys recomend for the rebulid? Its spitting out white smoke so I guess its a o-ring. whats this gonna cost? How much is the port? And do you think the turbos are ok? What a crappy day!

Idunno. They might give you money for a NEW engine. But Idunno how much new engines costs. It might be too high and they might just total your car. OR they will give you money for a reman. If they do, take that money and get your engine rebuilt w/ silicon/teflon coolant seals and oil mods.
Insurance companies will go w/ the cheaper alternative.

I say rebuild it. And I'm sure that your ins won't let you do the work...just a guess.

They don't care what you do.. they will need an estimate to get it fixed.. Then you can do whatever you want with the money..

I would suggest sending off your motor to pineapple or marvelspeed..

What a CRAPPY day? I disagree completely! You can -so- work this to your advantage. Your turbos are most likely fine. Why would they have been affected by the rotary sucking in a rag? If I were you, I'd take the money and use it for a rebuild and a port. You can get price quotes for the work at Pettit, Pineapple, or KDRotary online at their websites.

take your car to a place like mentioned above and get them to call the insurace co. and give them an estimate for the engine with the porting and such (of course you don't get them to say that) and get them to send a check! It works I know from experience... O and incase they think its too much get them to pay for the motor and them call your warranty co for a leaky condenser ($7xx.xx) and get them to send your shop that cash but just don't fix it cuz its not broke.. HA!
Ryker
P.S. I will not take responsability for your actions that may include insurance and warranty fraud.

Get them to quote you for the engine R+R too. Then do the R+R yourself and keep the money. I figure R+R is about $1500. You can buy mods w/ it!!!

When you crack an apex seal, pieces of it can sometimes exit through the exhaust and take out your turbines.

1.3maxhp: Lots of white smoke indicates coolant o-ring failure. I don't see how this could occur by leaving a rag in the intake....

My bad. I was thinking the rag was sucked directly into the engine.

Did the shop check out your turbos? I would think you'd be able to add those to your tab too, if they were ruined the same way your engine was.

Get written quotes on PAPER from Peter Farrell, Petit and Tripoint, they are sure to come back with the most expensive rebuilds out there. Make sure it includes the cost of removal and reinstall just like you brought it to their doorstep. Get quotes only for a rebuild exactly the way your engine is today, with no additional mods. Submit the quotes to the insurance company and they will cut you a check for the least expensive. Pocket the check and the extra several thousand dollars and go to Pineapple, or a good local re-builder that knows their stuff and is reasonable.

There is nothing dishonest about what I have just told you to do. By law, YOU have your choice of ANY companies to get your quotes, although the insurance company paying for the repairs would like you to think otherwise and may tell you must go to Joe's Garage or they won't pay the claim.

You owe me a beer - make it a case - for all the extra mods you can now afford. I accept Paypal donations for my beer fund, but I only like good stuff, so that will $25.00 for my advice. Thank you berry, berry much.

My Paypal account is RonKMiller@cs.com. I am thirsty. And patiently waiting.

I was thinking the same thing. Do you guys think the rag would make it through the intercooler into the motor? Hmmmmm....

Good luck! That would be cool if you end up with a street ported motor and a new paint job!

The rag would have just stalled the turbo, it would never make it through.

Keep the rag as a souvenier. I'd frame it... then bust it out of the case to polish up your NEW and FREE motor. Good luck. (As if you could be any more lucky after this)

Even if the rag did somehow get chopped up by the turbo, i really doubt it would make it through the intercooler. Maybe its just stuck in the intake somewhere and blocking air flow?

We in the rotary world have know about Nick for some time...(20 years)...He is much less than a known legend when it comes to rebuilds.

I think it's a common rule around here that Mazda isn't allowed to work on RX-7s because all they do is f*ck them up more.

Like RonKMiller said, you're allowed to choose where the car will be worked on, regardless of cost. It's your right by law. Don't let the bodyshop dictate where your car is going for repairs, it's your call.

Amazing...a rag got sucked in through the intake...i'd think it would get stuck in one of the pipes. Wow, you're a lucky lucky fellow :-D

I know this post is way late, but for those others who read, I'd just like to say...

The repair shop screwed up and instead of fixing this problem under thier own insurance policy, they have chosen insted to let it go under the car owners insurance.

The result of this IMO is...

The repair shop will not have to pay for thier screw-up
The car owner or whoever caused the accident will have to pay more for their insurance.
The general cost for repair of RX7s (according to the ins company) will go up and we will all pay more.
I think this sucks, they made the mistake, they should have to pay. And the fact that the repair company will make a greater profit on this sickens me. They should be driven from the market or arrested for insurance fraud.
