There is such a thing as thermoplastic polyurethane. And polypropylene and TPO's are both thermoplastic too...

I read the plastics code off the front bumper when I took it off and the Yamaguchi book says it is a Thermal Plastic :D

I think everyone that knows better just refers to the bumper as 'urethane', to save to confusion if one was to say pp, tpo, etc.

Is the plastics symbol on the 93 bumper? I know it's not on the '99 - I looked (didn't I ask you too Flybye, when you were selling your '99 bumper?). The '99 lip is pp though - that's on there.

Actually the reason I brought this up is because the repair method and fillers used are completely different for urethane vs. TPO and PP. So - if you are going to get your 99 license plate bracket shaved and repaired properly the technician better know his **** or you will have a problem down the road.

I would lay odds that the average body shop has absolutely no clue that they are different.

Details...:D

And for all you guys that jacked my thread::bash: :uzi: :flamed:

Get your own, damnit! :p:

Um, well, yeah. There's also "thermo" polyethylene, ABS and Nylon.

I think that's about it...... Damn, it's been a LONG time since I've been in the lab...

I'm just saying that the fact that the Yamaguchi book says it's 'Thermal Plastic' (?) doesn't mean it's TPO.

All thermoplastic means is that you can re-melt the plastic, as opposed to thermoset plastics, which undergo a non-reversible chemical reaction to cure and solidify them (like epoxy or bondo).

You have an excellent point! :worship:

So, Flybye - you have to provide more proof if you want your kudos.......I have taken them back.

I want PROOF - like:
what exactly IS the code on the bumper? And is this code a standard reference that can be verified?
(since I know Paw140 can look that up in a heartbeat and I have a new skin coming this week from Malloy I am going to look for it!)

AH HA!:D

1) I threw my stock bumper out a LONG time ago! I can't remember if the 99 spec bumper had it. I remember some nut asking me to look, and I looked for it, but I've sold the 99 allready. BUT.... :D ..... The mud flaps seem to be made of the same material as the bumper skins. It has TPE molded right into it (I'm holding it in my hands right now)

2) My exhaust overheat light came on ONCE. There is this big cruise spot in Miami. I was with my GF asnd we probably went around several times (stuck in almost non-stop traffic for a few hours), the light came on, I took a shit, and pulled over :p:

Allrighty then, we are talking Thermo Plastic Elastomer.
(VERY similar to TPO.)

I'm impressed. All hail the mighty Flybye - Lord of the FD3S. Bow down noobs!

Unless Paw140 wants to chime in again - he is a pursuing a doctorate after all in rocket science.....:D

What did you say you are holding in your hands?

You are supposed to pull over first - then take a shit!

I think this thread has met a natural death.......Buh bye.
