Knock Safegaurd from J&S

I'm just curious if anyone has ever tried this electronic knock safegaurd from :

http://www.jandssafeguard.com/

price is around $600

If so, did you use the standard single knock sensor, or did you have a 2nd knock sensor installed (for both rotors, or 3 for 3 rotors)? How well did it work?

I think I found the link to this somewhere on the fd3s.net or www.rx7.org/Robinette sites, idk, can't recall exactly.

i run the J&S Safeguard Knock Sensor and Timing Retard.

due to the more sophisticated Bosch knock sensor you do get a very different read on knock than w the standard mazda sensor.

i run the standard sensor in the front and the J&S in the rear.

there are a couple of versions. i think it is very important to only use the version that has a map sensor. since most of us run no split in vacuum if we were to encounter a bunch of knock the J&S would retard the leading behind trailing which would be bad.

my setup only retards in boost (10 degrees) and i run a minimum 11 degrees split so i won't have the problem.

opinions are split as to whether the IGL retard will save a motor but it won't hurt and i really value the knock lights should they ever come on.

further, if you really want to get cute, you can datalog off the Bosch sensor and get some meaningful tuning data.

and i will bet you could rig a throttle kill and really save your motor.

^^ Looking at their "Orders" page, which model do you have Howard, or if it's not listed, which one would you go with?

I was thinking of getting the 1004-1CH/2CH unit since it has both the IGL and boost retard options available (? heh) .. I figure if I'm going to make this investment to keep my motor safe while tracking, I might as well have as many options as I can. Ideally, I would want both the IGL and boost retard's (? heh) to be configured.

Will this unit work with the PFC and datalogic too?

Should I get 2 of the Bosche knock sensor kits, to have one for the front and one for the rear rotors?

I also would like to have the dual monitor as well, unit 2002 - http://www.jandssafeguard.com/monitors.html

Lastly, I found this link, that has instructions for either a 7 pin or 8 pin green rx7 - http://www.jandssafeguard.com/Archive_Instructions/RX7/

///////////1004-1CH/2CH //////////////

I would want both the IGL and boost retard's ///////boost retard is a great theory but by the time boost retards your engine is toast. i wanted the unit w the built in MAP sensor so it would only retard in boost, not vacuum where i run no split//////////
Will this unit work with the PFC and datalogic too?////////it works in addition to the PFC DL///////////

Should I get 2 of the Bosche knock sensor kits///////just get one and run the OEM sensor in front hooked into the PFC/////////

I also would like to have the dual monitor as well, unit 2002 - http://www.jandssafeguard.com/monitors.html////////i have the dual monitor but don't use it for AFR////////////////

Lastly, I found this link, that has instructions for either a 7 pin or 8 pin green rx7 - http://www.jandssafeguard.com/Archiv...RX7////////yes those are the INX////////////

good luck, it is a great piece.

Is the dual monitor not very accurate for use as part AFR? Or did you not have the Bosch LSM-11 sensor installed into a second bung hole? Other reason you don't use it?

Thanks for the info Howard, very valuable, I didn't think anyone would know much about it...

"Is the dual monitor not very accurate for use as part AFR?"

//// i run an entire new FJO system... wideband, alcohol injection and boost control. the wideband talks to the boost control and alcohol injection system so if something is outside my presets various things happen to help the motor.////

there are actually a good bit of people on the forum who use it. i made a post about it about 2 years ago and the "j & s knock sensor" seemed to be worth the money.

alot of people set it up so it monitors the rear rotor...since theres no knock support. and like was said...in the end it could save your motor

I have one of these with the dual monitor and the sensor in the rear rotor (and stock sensor in the front). I'm a believer in them but its one of those things where if it works, nothing happens. The good thing though is the sensor is very sensitive and adjustable, so you can adjust it so it barely does not activate, and then as soon as something is even slightly out of the ordinary, you'll know.

Nathan, when did you purchase yours? Are you running the stock ecu or something else? Did you have to get the special Bosche sensor kit? Are the AFR readings on the dual gauge accurate? What's the setup like?

I purchased mine about 4 years ago. I have the stock ECU. At that time the "purple" unit and the dual monitor was pretty new but it looks exactly like what is currently pictured on the website. I'm not sure if it has the bosch sensor but it was specifically for the RX-7, so I'm assuming so. In my opinion, an AFR gauge hooked up to the stock narrowband sensor (which is what this one does) isn't very precise, but it can tell you if you are in open or closed loop mode and if something is wrong with the fuel system. I wouldn't rely on it for tuning of any kind.

If I had to choose, I'd spend my money on an Aquamist water injection kit over this unit, just playing devil's advocate
