Question Kaaz differential (clutch type but why the popping?)

From what I've read in the past few weeks and experienced in the past few months with my new Kaaz LSD is that it is non-torsen as opposed to all other RX-7 rear diffs. I don't understand why, if it's clutch-type it has to pop at low speeds when cornering or turning (namely)? Is it a problem with the Kaaz or is it a problem with the diff.

I am thinking it is the way the unit works and not a problem with unit itself or the installation. I am all together happy with the diff, it just poses the problem with the chatter.

I did a search and didn't come up with anything useful but then again it probably is intuitive. Do other Kaaz owners have this popping feeling and noise coming from underneath their car or am I up ****'s creek?

the noise is perfectly normal after awhile you won't really notice it. are you using the kazz diff fluid? it helps alittle also after you do the figure 8's to break it in you should change the fluid again

RB use to sell two types of LSD for 1st gens.

Normal which has some spring spacers for smoother engagement/dis-engagement.

Then there was the racing type with out them.
It also popped but locked up more than the normal one.

Probably the same principal.

If it is popping, what's going on? Is the differential engaging and disengaging (like a clutch) as you turn the wheel (in a turn) stopping the rotation? If this is the case is it to slow the rotational speed of the wheel that doesn't need the excess power? Why the noise of the Kaaz?

It must be the springs then. I bet the Kaaz units don't have the springs for the clutch on the differential. It must be a clutch engagement similar to that of a puck design of a manual transmission's clutch. Meaning, there is no slipping involved, you are either engaged or not engaged.

Tell me if my logic is correct.

Sounds like you may need some friction modifier. This makes the gear oil slippery and can reduce the clutch pop or clatter. Ford sells some of it and it works well.

i second that

Dont get lsd fluid on any clothing.... the smell will not leave.... once you smell it u will hate it the rest of your life.... The worst part is taht I had to use my mouth as a siphon to get oil into the diff on my old s13.

The reason your diff makes that noise is because you didnt properly break it in.

Yes, you will always hear the noise, but if you do the figure eights properly as many times as it recommends... its alot better, it helps the teeth engage better and less clunk, just dont get stopped by more than 4 different cops at 2 different locations like I did... if they ask what in gods name your doing just show them the manual w/ the diagram showing the car doing figure eights..

i hope you got 1.5 way, cuzz 2 way is too much for street...

dont worry about the clunking, its normal... just so you know, to properly maintain the kaaz diff you supposed to change the oil every 3500 miles =)

later,

I did break it in properly (did the figure 8s), according to the manual. Some lady had no idea what the hell I was up to. I have already changed the oil the first time at 400 miles and am getting ready to change it again at an interval of 2,500 miles.

The noise is only slight. It has been getting progressively quieter and more tolerable (maybe I've gotten used to it though). I was just wondering what makes it pop like it did in the beginning and even now. I'm sure even though you break it in you are bound to still hear the noise because the clutch mechanism is not spring loaded (allowing it to slip a little) or is it? I wasn't sure about this.

Thanks Mahjik, cdk4219, etc and all that responded. I will probably buy an additive in order to try and make the noise a bare minimum of ear pollution.

how do you like the kaaz for normal driving besides the funky noises?
Does it feel dramatically different when you come hard out of a turn or WOT going straight?
Wheel hop?

I was wondering the same thing. With the BNRs, I figure the first time I go to launch on the stock diff it'll explode like a pumpkin with an M80 in it....

Ive been using the kaaz diff for about 2 years now and it was louder/more chatter when it was newer, the biggest improvement was when i put the GM LSD additive in it, its a little 6oz bottle less than 10 bucks at the chevy dealer and it reduced the chatter down to a mininum only when tight turn or still cold. overall i love it esp at the autoX, but it was getting very annoying all that clunking until I put the additive in now all I need is a resonated midpipe the straight pipe is killin me

just put my kaaz in... my stocker was stripped...
Well I'm going to change the oil tomorrow and see how much better she sounds.. right now I'm getting the clunking at startup...i.e. acceleration. also I am hearing a whining noise that I think is coming from my aluminum brake disk backing plate doing some bump-and-grind w/ my rotor. I'll let you know.... as of right now I'm happy... If you do it yourself (i.e. pull the diff and take it somewhere) remember the axle nuts are 36's and have a tranny/rear-end jack handy. Also look for stripped suspension nutz. It took me 3 hours to pull it... including breaks... and 2 hours to get it back in... be sure to replace your oil side seals... axle clips... and rear tranny seal if you need one. (less than 30 bucks)

wow, this is an old school post...

kaaz diffs are sexual... really

I've intsalled a 1.5 way on my 240sx, my current 7, my bro just slapped one on his FC and hes lovin it up...

Also, a note about the noise, the differential no longer makes the noise at low speed turns on the 240... Maybe it finally set, i dunno...

Word of the wise, you can get the same weight oil from Autozone as that of the Kaaz oil and you will save atleast 40 dollars.

The kaaz diffs are amazing, you get superior control of your car and the power transfer is alot quicker.

Just make sure you get some coilovers so you can really take advantage of the lsd suspension b4 looks!
