Wink Just ordered the RA rebuild video

Hopfully its pretty good. Ill do a full write up on it when I get the movie. Anyone else see it. Its the rebuild video by Bruce T. Ive herd its pretty good and since 93blackFD rebuild his own motor, im sure I can do mine. Its also not my daily driver so I can take as long as I want.

But anyways, I need some recomendations..

Should I get new housings, if yes, do you recomend anywhere besides mazda. Is cryo treatment worth it, and yes, im a poor college student so nothing to expensive.

Any recomendations on side seals?

A good place near Austin Texas that can polish up my rotors and e-shaft.

Is it possible to do the all the oil mods myself or do y'all have any recomendations on who would be best for that.

My main concern is sending **** off and it taking 10 years to come back to me. If you know of any place that is close to me, quick, good, and cheap, please let me know.


If you have anyother recomendations about anything please throw them out too. If you couldnt already tell, I have never rebuilt an engine. Couldnt be any worse than differental equations, could it?

The video is very informative if not a little dry. As far as what you'll need to replace, you'll have to inspect and measure everything before you'll know what to do. Bruce goes over how to do the oil mods in the video, which are quite simple. I would recommend only to do the thermopellet mod, and not the oil jet mods, as the oil jet mod is more for race/plane engines that are always in the high rpm. Polishing the rotors and e-shaft? There is no need for that. Just clean them up really well. As far as side seals go, I almost always reuse them, unless they are out of spec.

nice observation...its obviously the greddy sp same as I have damn that thing is huge but it sounds wonderful

I watched the video and passed out and hit my head about 5 times during it. The one on how to pull your motor I watched for fun because I had already done it but that wasnt helpful at all. I know exactly what to do and it was still confusing as hell. Ive considered making a video of this stuff that will actually show things being removed one by one but I doubt ill ever do it especially since every car is different and mine is missing most of the stock engine bay stuff because it is modified.

Yeah, my GF photoshopped the sig, and inverted the pic because it flows with the rest of the stuff better. And the exhaust is a PFS, not a greddy.

Thanks for the help so far. Im sure there will be plunty more threads to come when I begin to tear in to the motor. That wont be for awile though as I have not ordered the rebuild kit yet. I guess ill wait till I know exactly what I need to get the job done.

Anyone know anything about the o-rings that Rotary Av. sells in their rebuild kits. Are they better than OEM?

I bought both videos because I have never pulled an RX7 motor. Pulled plunty of old piston engines with my dad, but this car has a **** load of wires, lines, and misc. crap that I couldnt even make up a name for. Most likely a waste of money but for 25 bucks I figured watching it couldnt hurt. If I learn one thing, I figure it will be worth the money.

if you want to PM me about any details, you're welcome to

get all of your seals from mazda directly, do not bother with these gimmicky teflon and viton seals...they are not proven and if you build it right the mazda seals are more than adequate

you do not need oil mods, again, this is a gimmick that the rebuild shops employ, the stock FD oiling system is OVER engineered

go NOW and buy a set of seals from rotaryaviation.com (apex seals)

the price will jump march 1st

i'd recommend steve kan at gotham racing for porting or getting rotor housings, they have great pricing and QUICK turnaround- and they're a great bunch of guys

you can do it yourself, once you break the motor apart and clean it, the hard work is done...i put 20 miles on my car today with the biggest grin on my face ever...i wish everyone could experience this, my total rebuild was MUCH less than a reman (a little over half of the cost)

I was reading their info on the apex seals. It would appear that they are reselling those Rotary Aviation "Real World Solutions" apex seals.

I'm not sure, but if I was rebuilding a rotary engine (which i did last year) and had any questions about anything regarding the rebuild (from how to do something, to where parts come from, to how much they cost,etc...) I would call Bruce and ask. You'll get a real answer without fluff and BS.

You can call Bruce anytime, and he is really helpful. As far as the R.A. o-rings, I say DO IT. They kick ***. When you pull your motor apart, you will see the combustion o-rings coming apart in pieces. They have a teflon lining on each. The R.A. o-rings are fully encased in teflon. They can be reused in some cases. Viton is a much more durable compund than the stock rubber oil control o-rings as well. Get the o-ring kit. You can talk about how they are new, and not proven, but think about it: These are designed for airplanes. If you blow your engine in your rx7 driving around town, you get really pissed. If you blow your engine in your RV-3 (airplane) you get really dead. Trust me, I've used these seals on several engines, and they are great. But do whatever you feel more comfortable with. Just don't take Mazda's engineering as infallible, ****, look at the air separation tank.
