I would wager that it's more like Malloy actually verifies they have working good parts/engines where as some dealerships won't take the time.

So Malloy opens up the engines and inspects the components? They inspect the rotor housings, and linings to make sure they are OK. There is no other way to know if you have good rotor linings. Of course that would involve many hours to rebuild the rebuilds after they were already rebuilt. That would be really expensive.

My understanding is that Malloy offers a good price on the rebuilt engines they sell. No way they can afford to tear them down for inspection.

So how do they know the condition of the housings? They don't!! Since the conditon of the housings is the primary concern with a rebuilt engine, why would you think Malloy has a better procuct.

I'm not saying anything bad about Malloy. I'm sure they are a fine dealership, with great service, and well trained people. I am saying that they get the same engines as everyone else.

Mazda changed who builds thier remans about 2 years ago. Everysince they have been solid, as a matter of fact all most everyone I've heard of that was torn down for posting it was verified they they had ALL NEW housings!!!!

The reason people blow an engine, then replace it with a reman and blow it too is cause they didnt fix the prob that cause the original engine to blow. Like a fuel filter with 75K miles on it.

Anyway, if you get a reman its going to be built to factory specs and its probably going to have all new housings. You get yours rebuilt and they are only going to replace the housings that were scared by an apex seal failure.....and your going to pay 50% more for it

The problem with your car is most likely from the install job, not the engine

How topical. Tiny bubbles in my filler neck while running. EVERYTHING else running in top shape. Yes, I removed air bubbles. They come back every time the car runs. Yes I pressure tested it, replaced the leaking water pump (and housing, whee!), tightened the hoses that were drooling. Yes it displaced coolant from the overflow even when running at ~150F. Grrr...

I was thinking of a Malloy re-man sent to Pineapple for tear down, check, and rebuild with warrantee. No porting. Drive down, pick it up, re-pop it myself. Any thoughts?

93 Touring with 67K. Previous owner said he never overheated it, but I got it with a bad filler cap and seeping filler neck machine plug (the allen worm screw right on top). He had the stock gauge, so I'm thinking he drove it around, managed to tear his eyes away from the scintilating Tacoma traffic long enough to see the needle in the red, drove it some more, shut it off (I'm envisioning the lights being off so the fans were just keeping things at warp temp!), then called "a buddy" who told him yer screwed. So he screwed me instead. When I checked it out, it ran fine, good compression, and temps were well behaved for the 45 minutes we drove around (stock temp gauge lying to me!). Live and learn...

I had to have a reman put in cause of warranty. I wanted to have it built by Pineapple but they wouldn't allow it. But hey, I'll take a free engine anyday .

The frigging snow is killing me. I was driving the 7 again as soon as the weather got nicer, and now i'm back in the Monte(which is fine). The only problem is that i'm used to the throttle response of the 7, and the Monte takes a second to get the power to the ground, so i'm giving the Monte too much gas all the time, and spending a lot of time sideways over the past 2 days. I was facing the guardrail getting on Storrow Drive yesterday.
Back to the subject of remans. I have also heard from a variety of sources(some reputable, some not), that most the remans now have new housings.

$2995 for reman. $160 for shipping to Pineapple. $600 to $900 for 5 year warantee level rebuild on reman. I'm pretty sure I'm ordering on Monday.

Why not just buy an engine from Pineapple. Do they offer a warranty???

my Malloy reman had two NEW housings and the rotors were in excellent shape....this was verified by Chris (mr. rx7tt) who tore down the engine for porting and reliability upgrades

Right. So I spent an hour on the phone with Rob. Here's the deal. To get an engine from them, I have to give an engine to them. To give them mine means pulling it, stripping it, driving it down there, waiting 3 weeks, driving back down there, bringing it up, trying to remember where everything goes, then putting it in. Meanwhile, I have to find other transpo, which isn't easy just now. Instead, I drive down there, pick up a 5 year warantee engine, drive it back, and R&R the parts right there in the garage, from one engine to the other. To my limited brain, this seems the better plan. I can even keep driving the RX in limited fashion until the engine is ready.

Getting the feeling I forgot to invest in the beater mod? Yep.

Anyway, the cost for a 5 year warantee rebuild on my engine is quoted at $2695. So 2995 + 900 less the $1000 for core return, and it's a rough wash. At this much dinero, a few hundred either way doesn't really matter, I guess (limited thinking capabilities, remember?)

Anyway, I'm pretty sure this block was overheated before I came along, and it would be easier to start from more fresh parts that my sad little bubbler.
