Just got my fd has a couple problems
Well the guy i bought it from said he overheated it and it was losing coolant so i was thinking it had a bad coolant seal. But when i looked in the oil it was the normal brown color. Also when it starts is blows blue and black smoke so i am thinking the turbo oil seals are shot. The car starts up fine and has plenty of power. But as soon as i take it on the street it wants to over heat so i am thinking it is the thermostat. But i can get a mazda one tomorrow so i was going to get a store brand which i know is bad but which out of all of them should i buy? I will most likley only use it for a day or two just untill i can get to my dealer and see if that is the problem.

No i was not going to take it to the dealer i was saying untill i get to the dealer to get a new thermostat. I work a dealer that owns a mazda store so i get wholesale price. I did replace the thermostat with a pepboys one last night took me 2 hours and put it in and the temp is perfect but it still smokes bad but it is bluish smoke and smells like oil and mainly gas when i first start it up and there is oil in the intercooler piping so i am thinking my turbo oil seals are bad. I fixed the main coolany leak which was the heater core hose and dont seem to be losing any coolant just a little oil. Thanks guys

I will a little later need to wash it But it is mostly stock execpt for the exhaust which is a downpipe mid pipe and dont know the brand of the cat back. There is no cats or silencers so it is real loud but sounds soooo cool need to find a racing beat dual. But the smoke think has to go. The car was broken into so my stereo was jacked and some of my door panel pieces were broke.

This car COULD need some serious (read: expensive) fixes. When you say it 'overheats', I am assuming you mean the temp gauge indicates overheating and you get...what...sort of symptoms? How is your coolant level? Do you constantly have to refill it? Have you done the 'champagne bubble test'? How new are the pressure caps? I am just saying it seems you are convinced it is the thermostat, when quite frankly less than 1/10th of 1% of all FD overheatings are caused by a bad thermostat. Usually (sadly) it is something much more serious.

Dude i am not stupid i have 2 other 2nd gens, i know how to problem solve i am not a pro or a mechanic by any means but when a car overheats after running 4min that is from poor coolant circulation. Not saying it dont need a coolant seal but the temp gauge is in the ideal area now after the replacement and it is not over heating. The car runs fine and stops smoking after it is warmed up so it is going to be driven and i have been checking the coolant and oil everytime i go out.

Just reading your replies, its best to appreciate comments from those on the forum. Especially those that have experience in these matters. Because one day when there is a real problem, they may not be inclined to help you out.
I think you're lucky from your last reply, it looks like a turbo oil leak. I had the same problem. My FD overheated and leaked coolant, you can tell by the white smoke and sweet smell. Best to do a compression test to validate your concerns.

I see you say the car is mostly stock with downpipe, midpipe and catback. Watch your boost very carefully you may need to port the wastegate or put the stock midpipe on. Good luck with the cooling issues.
