JDM FD and US FD

Hello every one,

I was wondering if any one knows if the Japanese FD's crash test results are the same as the US FD crash test results? I need to know this inorder to register my JDM FD. I contacted Mazda Japan, and none of them could tell me. So I contacted Mazda USA and they said to contact Mazda Japan. ><;;

unfortunately, there are no '92 FD's in the States (edit: no USDM '92 FD's, that is). they began selling them here with the '93 model. i'm not sure if you can use a '93-95's crash data for a '92. best of luck, though!

US crash tests are different from Japanese crash test standards.
What makes you think they are the same?

And no automotive manufacturer will tell you/give you the results of these tests.

Good luck registering your car...you're going to need it.

I dont know my RI told me to find that out. how about the FD 92-95? thats how its listed on the import elegibility list.

TAK4!, sorry to tell you this, but your RI shafted you. He may be an RI, but I *guarantee* you he's not registered to federalize FDs. Why? Because it has NEVER been done. I know...I used to have a RHD FD

For starters, a '92 - '95 JDM FD will NEVER be legal in the US EVER, because the NHTSA has a stipulation that if a LHD version is available in the US, a RHD version can never be street legal.

Moreover, Mazda Japan never crashtested the '96+ FDs to US standards, since they never sold the '96+ in the US. And the data is NOT comparable; 2 (it used to be 4) cars MUST be crashtested to have this done. The rough cost of this is about $200,000 - $250,000 (for renting the crashtest facility, analyzing the data, all the forms, fees, etc etc).

Long story short, there is no LEGAL means to register your FD on the street. There are several ILLEGAL methods, but I don't help or engage in those methods, so I can't help ya there either

Oh and FYI, I just re-looked at the NHTSA Vehicle Eligibility List, and as per the petition (not a final document or ruling), it doesn't say you can register a JDM FD; it only says they've ruled the 93 - 95 FD is CAPABLE of being CONVERTED to FMVSS, but it doesn't list an RI who's able to do that, or that the research of WHAT needs to be done to conform them has done. And unfortunately, that's the misleading pretense MANY RIs sell these and other similar vehicles under. They tell you "oh yea, it's on the list, it can be converted," but neither they nor ANYONE ELSE in the country knows HOW to convert them.

why do you want a JDM FD?
I can sort of understand people who want to import a farily new FD (02) but a 92 is beyond me.

Move to Canada! Come spring, you'll be able to grab a busted *** JDM FD for nothing, they'll be all over the place up here. There will be so many giant winged fd's rolling around that the collective downforce will disrupt the jet stream.

I dont know whats what. People say its impossible to register it, but here in hawaii, we have a handful of JDM cars, also the DOT told me I can do it, but it will be costly. On the other hand, people here in RX7 club probably knows more about RX7s then any one else, and you tell me I cant. haha confused.

Yes, what ppl do is they move the cars from country to country, to circumvent federal laws. Don't be surprised if most (if not all) of those cars are illegal. There are ways to get around the laws, but if you get caught, byebye car Oh and that's assuming that by "JDM" you meant "RHD."

Exactly...to the tune of $200,000 or so. That's why no one has done it to date There's only one way to find out WHAT changes need to be made to conform the car: crashtest it. Good luck doing that

No. RHD and LHD crashtesting characteristics have never been proven to be similar. And the bottom line is, your RI - if legit - should have been able to provide you w/ a list of references and examples of RX-7s he brought in and FEDERALIZED. That means a DOT VIN, and the title reading the correct year, make, model, the HS-7 Form, Customs Release forum, EPA paperwork, etc etc.

There were 93's made in '92 but you will get the run around asking for help from Mazda. They do have some kind of form thing on their website for importing vehicles. You should start with that.

a quick question to you all.

Here in norway it is a law that all cars that can be registered in the US must be licensed in norway no questions asked. If there is something like that about european cars over there i can get you papers on that the JDM rx-7 is approved to the european crash tests and other european standards.

this is what we call a TUV document. Its a approval document for allover europe!

bisQuit, good thinking, but (I know this is a generalization lol) Americans are a little high on themselves haha. They don't accept ANYTHING from ANYONE lol. Not measurements (SI), temperature ratings (C), foreign studies, and definitely not vehicle safety standards. Heck, if a vehicle in Canada (our neighboring country) doesn't meet US standards, it's not eligible for importation! (Eg, in Canada, you can now bring in 15 year old Skylines and RX-7s...but you can't bring those cars across the border into the US, even w/ a Canadian title).
