the newer trannies have the exhaust bracket on the right side of them, in case you're trying to distinguish a 99 from a US one

The only difference that I can tell is that 5th is taller and the 3rd and 5th gear syncros were strenghten.

I hear you get more accel out of the JDM one.
IE: JDM is built for performance, and the US is built for better fuel consumption?

How can you tell the diff between the two? I need to get a new tranny and was looking into the JDM one....

THANKS!

I have the JDM one installed in my car. Found this out during a rebuild a few years ago The only difference I know of is 5th gear is taller. Maybe other parts are strengthened per the older posts. Don't know but this could be why I haven't blown it up with the 20B. Am going to swap it out soon though for a T56.

Is there a visual difference?

Not that I know of. Only knew I had the JDM one when the rebuilder called me and told me so. He said 5th gear was different. I run higher rpms at 60 mph.

no external difference; depending on year of JDM different 5th gear ratios, 5th gear syncro upgrade, some shifter fork upgrades ??

Yes, I brought back an 8 year old thread...
The reason is that the speed limit in Japan is 50 MPH at best, and most people cruise at about 60, so there's no reason for the 5th gear to be any higher if the speed limit isn't 70 MPH. My MR2 gets much louder at 70 MPH than it is at 50, even in fifth gear.

It means the fifth gear might actually be useful on a circuit though, but only if you've got very high power.

yes the jdm diffs have a 430 gear ratio in them , while US ones have the 390 and i believe they make a 410 as well.

pretty positive the tranny has stayed basically the same on the 3rd gen FD since day one , a few minor adjustments here and there

Don't know about the tranny.

Just in case some people didnt find the precise info they were looking for, the US FD tranny has a 5th gear ratio of 0.719 and the J Spec one has a ratio of 0.806. They fit perfectly into the US car.

There is a lot of bullshit in this thread.

Here are the facts:

Five speed JDM FD's with 17" wheels from the factory have a .762 fifth and 4.3:1 diff. The sole exceptions to the rule were the first two versions of the black RZ....these had 16" wheels and the above ratios.

The five speed JDM FD's with factory fitted 16" wheels had a .806 fifth gear with a 4.1:1 diff.

Lot's more JDM info at FDRX7.com

Tell them I sent you
