Unhappy It's Official, the RX-7 is gone forever...

From August 1st, Mazda dealers in Japan are no longer accepting orders for the RX-7.
That's the end of an era, the end of the Car, and maybe the end of the rotary, as I was told it wouldn't pass the Japanese domestic model exhaust gas emissions regulations for 2003.
Sad day.

Yep, we know all about it. There was a decent thread in the lounge about it. I can't remember exactly what date the last one rolls off the line though.

The RX-7 can live again with the new Renesis rotary engine which is more emission friendly. Looks like they won't be retrofitting the 3rd gen, though. We'll have to wait until a new 4th Gen RX-7 pops up with a Renesis.

Everyone buy an RX-8 for your family car so the rotary will be successful!

The next RX-7 is in development. This has been confirmed by reliable sources in side and out of Mazda. I wouldn't be surprised to see a concept in Detroit, but definitely in Tokyo next year. FE anyone?

I guessing that the next two seat rotary (renesis) sports car from mazda will be an RX-9 not a 4th Gen -7

Yea they are not getting rid ofthe 7 forever guys. Come on man The rx7 is probably the most popular Mazda next to the Miata. You know they can't keep away from it for long.

I **THINK** the RX7 is the longest running Japanese sportscar, isnt it? 1979 to 2002 is pretty impressive.

I think Skylines have been around longer but I don't know. I'm not married yet. I'm 18 in 16 days, but I plan on getting one for my family car. Unless I'm filthy rich I'll get an M5 .

Longevity of the Rx7 does not depend on the manufacturer that created the masterpiece. It depends on the people like us that created the love of the masterpiece.

Its sad n' all. I sometimes think that they called the RX-8 the "RX-8" because I don't think Mazda could've really topped the 3d gen RX-7. So I say let the RX-7 end with the 3rd generation. Let it become a classic now, a legend in its own right.

And have the RX-8, and so on, continue the rotary existence.

rx7 longest running jap sports car?

nah preludes were introduced in 78 and ran up untill 2002, the whole time being imported to the US. they went through 5 generations. but i believe the Z cars have been around for a little longer, but then again it kinda evolved from 240Z-280Z-300Z so that might not count. also supras were made way back in the day when there was a celica/supra. just food for thought.

The future of the 4th Gen RX-7 in the US depends on the success of the RX-8.

The 4th Gen will exist in Japan either way.

There is actually a test mule car with the FD body that's been spotted by several forum members in the Detroit area. It's white with Manufacturer's plates and a bunch of electronic gizmos inside. I don't know exactly what it is that they're testing, but hopefully this might be a sign that a 4th gen is on the way.

Also, I don't think that they'll call it RX-7 anymore, it'll be called RX-9.

First of all, noone really recognizes the RX-7 name in America any more. Also, Mazda dealers would have a tough time explaining to the average consumer why an RX-7 costs more than an RX-8 because 8 is higher than 7.

So assuming that they do end the RX7 line, doesn't that mean that the value of our cars will go up? Plus I personally think it cool to be able to say that I own the last model/style of a great supercar.

Not to worry. Our RX7s will become more and more rare, exotic, and cool. Everybody, take good care of your rotaries.

I'm thinking I'll put a Renesis engine in my FD and turbocharge it. Go no where man has gone before.

Specification of the final Units....

http://www.japanvehicles.com/newcars/mazda/RX7/main.htm

Last one's made will roll off the line in Japan in mid-September 2002, and are all presold as the last run of these were built to order. The Skyline is a much longer production run, since 1968, with Skyline "concept car" sold in very limited numbers in '67. Skyline GT-R, GT-S, RX-7 all discontinued in 2002 leaves only the Lancer Evolution and Subaru Imprezas as available "real" sports models, and has encouraged Toyota to revive the Supra turbo. Emmissions, Insurance and safety issues are making the Japanese supercar go the way of the US made 60's muscle car IMHO.

a 4th gen rx-7 test mule in detroit? Im not saying I know how it works with mazda development..... but the rx-7 is a Japanese car, with Japanese engineering...... I'm sure if they are working on and testing a new rx-7 anywhere, it will be in Japan.
