250hp if the weight is about 2600lbs or less should be good with an optional 3-rotor 350hp upgrade :egrin:

Spirit-RE 02-13-14 01:28 PM

Anyone find solid information of this directly from Mazda? It all seems like more speculation and renderings.

wutangben 02-13-14 01:29 PM

yeah, thread title and first thread post did not deliver.

ZoomZoom 02-13-14 02:11 PM

Guess we will wait and see. Doesn't exactly sound like its much of an effort. Maybe they looked at the last successful Rotary 2nd Gen and decided that is the price point and power level they need to be at to be competitive.

It also puts them in competition for the money that is usually spent on a WRX, VW GTI, Civic Si, etc.
Its probably about as sound of a business decision bringing back the RX-7 could be.
Is it exciting? I guess if you love the idea of a rotary engine more then you like going fast then likely...

Maybe the perfect solution to silence its critics as well. There was alot of love for those N/A Rotary cars back in the day. It can be argued that its going back to its roots and its original customer base.

Quoted from the linked article:

Mazda's official line on the new RX-7 is a typically Japanese “no concrete plans.” Privately, though, executives admit the car and new rotary are underway. They also say the launch date is included in Mazda's long-term product plan; it calls for “five new cars by the end of financial year 2016.”
Until the plans do become concrete I'm guessing Mazda wont say much officially, it would make them look bad if the project gets shelved again so they probably wouldn't want to commit to anything too early.

Ill pass on the 250hp NA 2-rotor on a Miata platform, that sounds pretty lackluster. The 3-rotor option sounds promising but Im not holding my breath. I really really want a FD sucessor, not a SA/FB type car. If the top range model doesn't have the same presence and capabilities as their last series 8 RZ cars it will be a big let down.

camajo 02-13-14 02:50 PM

I wish Mazda would go as radical as what Toyota showed in Detroit. The FT-1, if they build it, looks like a worthy Supra successor. RX-7 needs the same!! Make a hero car Mazda!!! I don't want a gas mileage oriented sports coupe.. you can keep it!

96fd3s 02-13-14 02:57 PM

Sounds like the FD is still going to be the big brother of the bunch

Exidous 02-13-14 03:10 PM

I'm pretty sure this is a combined endeavor with Fiat. I had read somewhere about Fiat asking Mazda for the rights to the Miata/MX-5 name.

ZoomZoom 02-13-14 03:21 PM

Can't wait to see one at the track :)

Mitchocalypse 02-13-14 03:28 PM

So the chances of ever seeing a new forced induction rotary is basically 0 right?

93rx74lyfe 02-13-14 03:50 PM

We already have a 255hp two rotor car with great mod potential and super model looks, if this new car isnt a step up from that then i really dont see the point.

other than maybe people who want the reliability of having a brand new car.

MisterX 02-13-14 08:52 PM

They can keep the Miatafied Mustang with the gutless 250 hp. Even if it weighs 2000 lbs (by some miracle) acceleration in the triple digits will be anemic. Oh, but the handful on here crying for the almighty "handling, Bud! All we ask from thee is lightweight and handling!" will have been answered. There's a couple dozen sales right there, Yokohama!

+2
Ft-1 now that's a step up. But 250hp really, I hope not

Whitetiger777 02-13-14 10:11 PM

From what I understand the new head of Mazda only wants to make cars that make money. I think he said something to the effect of, unless it will sell over 200,000 units he wont make it.

spikespencer 02-13-14 10:45 PM

That's depressing but I'll continue to wait for solid details. I would prefer N/A but I was expecting something with more power than a minivan.

Guys, we need to remember that a BONE STOCK FD produced only about 220 RWHP, but it competed with and beat many competitors of it's day. Let's just wait to see what Mazda comes up with. If they can take 300 lbs out of the FD, produce a truly world class design AND offer an optional 3 rotor engine, all with respectable gas mileage, I think they will sell very well. They absolutely need to stay in the $25K to $45K price range for Mazda to hit their sales targets.

Customisbetter 02-14-14 10:23 AM

Keep it light, and focus on the details (which lets face it, Mazda is very good at) and I think i will love it.

Also keep double wishbone on all four corners please.

All you guys that think 250 hp is gutless, you are out of your minds.

Alfa-Romeo not Fiat. Alfa wanted a new roadster platform, so they paid Mazda to build one. this platform will be shared with the Alfa and the new Miata.

Then alfa slaps a turbo onto their car . and it kicks the miata's ass in everythiung they will look at that rotary and think.......

Natey 02-14-14 12:12 PM

I agree with Montego. Back to the drawing board, Mazda. And don't try to sell us on that Renesis crap, either. 16x or nothing and make it beefy and ready for boost.

If Toyota tones the vents, flares, and Viper-esque rear down a little bit, that Ft-1 looks sick.

I guess I could make one myself when I hit the Lotto
