They'll still be around. I think your progression of Civic to FC to FD would be a very good choice. Hell, you could get a clean n/a FC now for not too much money. It will still be an old car with maintenance issues but they're much cheaper than FDs and you can learn RWD on a car with only 140-160 hp.

Stupidity

I am 20 and I have wanted a FD for the past 4 years. Through all the research and driving other cars made me want FD's even more. I come from Ottawa and at a light I was in a 5.0 and suddenly a silver beauty pulled up beside. I looked right and it was a Supra TT, my jaw dropped.. the light turned green and the Supra took me straight off the line and never looked back.

The next weekend I was with some friends at the street races, a mean sounding Supra was lined with and FD and the FD won by like 3 cars lengths...

From that day I knew it was going to be RX7. So I did research and the more I did the more I found out that this was a track car not a drag car. Thats when I saw the Jap video RX7 R34 R33 Nsx's and Evo's and the Rx7 was the winner outa all of them, it just confirmed my previous sentiments. It has been two years since then that I have been intensly shopping for an Rx7...

Fast forward to now last night I just drove my first FD and I cant wait to get it....

So don't hate on this kid dreams can come true but as I have learned they can take a long and I mean a long time, as mine still hasn't come true.

And as a little inside there will be a 2007 Mazda Rx-7 Turbo retailing for 60,000 Canadian soooo people in my situation have an interesting choice FD now or 4th gen..........

Peace

You should get a naturally aspirated FC (non-turbo). I'm sure they have newbie stickies and things in the 2nd gen forum. Non-turbo models include the "base", the Sport, the GXL, the GTU, and the GTU-S.

you have 11 poss here. I have over 1000 and I am no where close to what a ton of well known folks know here. We wouldn't need "your friends dad and his dealerships" to inform us. Besides, dealerships are always givne bullshit bones to chew on that are mostly incorrect. Also, we all know how much dealerships really know about the cars

how fast could the non turbo be compared to the turbo version? i was thinking about getting the turbo version since i could start early on a turbo.

edit: and about the 60000 retail rx-7 thats coming out. theres no way im going to be able to afford that kind of car.

Mazda Speed Protege... One of the best handling FF cars I have driven.. I actually think it was a little nicer feeling than my Integra Type R stock for stock..

the FD is not a car that I would want to rely on to drive daily as my only means of transportation.

i dont plan on driving the FD as a daily driver (got the MPV and QX4 for that) . its going to be a weekend toy mostly. im not interested in the MS protege either(even though i think its a pretty nice car) , i would rather get a FC. anyways back to my last post.
edit: how about rx-8s in the future? i know they arent even close to rx7s in speed but i know they can be modded. are those still a PITA to maintain?

Buy a FD because you respect the car and know what you're getting yourself into. You will be somewhat of a miniority with this car and will attract a lot of attention. This may or may not be desirable.

If youre just looking for something fast/low maintenance, get a s2k, g35, sti or something. At least these will have warranties. Or if you cant afford brand new, get a 300zx tt, or mr2 tt, or 240sx with SR20. These are all cars that will be fun to drive minus most of the headaches. The FD can be expensive to maintain and has little tolerance for bullsh*t.

I'm not trying to bag on you or anything, but you're at least 5 years away from a FD unless your parents buy it for you. Your thread "interested in in a FD. but there are also some problems " is somewhat misleading.

I can't believe I read this thread. What a waste of time. I can't believe I even wasted the time to post on it. I am an idiot
yeah, im an idiot too

after reading this, I am also going to get an FC and hold off on the FD. but my FC will only be used 3 seasons in a year due to me not knowing how any of them deal with cold weather. I found great, clean FC3S Turbo II's but after seeing the crazy tags on the FD's I think that I will wait until I am 20 or 21 until I get one, then I will see if I will have enough money to lightly modify it for around 300whp. I am going to look up more about both RX models tomorrow to find out which mods are the most reliable. If so, I can also help you too SayNoToPistons

how exactly did you "earn" it? im not trying to say you shouldnt have it, because it appears to have worked out for you, but i do agree that most people my age (17) shouldnt have an FD as a first car. i doubting your claim that you 'earned' it yourself. however, if you did pay for it yourself, congratulations, im jealous.

nice. thats how i want to start off also. ill just work hard to maintain it as well as i can with some of your help too . but im not 100% sure yet since its going to be 2 more years until i REALLY think about getting one.
pos7- i know this car attracts a lot of attention, but thats not why i want to get one. i want to get one because it means something to me (seriously it does!). in NYC you dont want TOO much attention (QX4 already has enough and have been keyed several times). well thanks for your help guys. ill be making another topic on this in 2 more years (maybe on the FC section)

edit: while i wait, does anyone in the NY/NJ/LI area want to teach me about rotary during the weekends or summer vaction?

ive decided to go with a cheap FC n/a first or if im lucky to find a drivable turbo II for cheap. Clin10 and i both have the same plan in mind so we both will get a FC and we'll share info on what we know and we will continue to learn together. we might even get our FCs as early as next summer!
does anyone in the NY, NJ, LI area want to give lessons on RX's?

So you're 17 now, why have you had TWO FDs?

I have had 2 FDs because i was sitting at a light and i got rear ended by a stupid **** tard. I earned my car, and i respect it. I payed 12k for my first FD. I had 10.5 of it and my dad loaned me the 1.5 and i payed him back in 2 months. Then i modded it. Motor popped. Put 10k into it after the whole winter had passed of it sitting. Then i drive it for 2 months, got hit. Then i got my second Fd for 5k that needed a new motor and diff. I had them from my wrecked 7 so i put them in and now have that one running and on the road. I have 0 tickets, 0 accidents. I pay 45$ a month for insurance and the big bullet right now is gas. Just because i go to school doesnt mean i cant own a nice car. I have fucked up with my car. And i have learned what the car can do to me. Just becasue your "older" doesnt mean to deserve a car more than anyone else.

I earned my car by working my *** off to come up with the money. I worked every day all day at 3 jobs during summer and spring. I payed for most of my Fd in my cash and the other part my parents loaned me which i have long sence payed back. I am also 17. And the car scares me. Its has scared me before to where i hesitated to drive it for a day or 2. But i know what it can do and how fast something can happen so i respect it and its power.

^^^ yea that's what i was thinking 45 bucks/month sounds crazy, when my mom called the insurance company it was just $200 for liability under HER name. Right when she she said RX7 1993, i heard the lady on the other line laugh and say ohhh man... tell me your son isn't going to be driving that. Right now i'm under her name and have had a spotless record since i got my drivers license 3 and a half years go. I'm 19 by the way and i'm still paying off the car working my *** off full time and going to school full time, i literally don't even see my friends and family that much because of it. It's an amazing car but automatics suck pistoncock.

Perfect reason NOT to buy it too early. First, never put straight liability on a car that you still owe money on. In one distracted moment you can go from car to no car and no money to buy a new one. Second, what's the point of owning a nice car that you can't enjoy because you're working your *** off all the time?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for younger people owning anything they want or dreaming anything they want. I think the people on this thread who are so against it are just pissed off that they weren't successful enough to own one so early in life and are just jealous of those who have been able to swing it, but if you're only paying liability and working too much to enjoy it, you really can't afford it.

For all the old farts on here whose midlife crises' are threatened by people half your age owning your car... GET OVER IT. If anything, you should be happy that a bunch of kids are buying and crashing RX7's... it's making the value of your car go up. Anyone who thinks this thread is a waste of time, 5 pages of posts says otherwise; it's a free country, go somewhere else, no one's holding a gun to your head making you read it.

Have dreams, have fun, live for the experience, but remember that there are people who can buy nice things, and then there are people who can AFFORD nice things.

^^ very true, i still enjoy the car very much but it's not practical at the moment with school and all, which is why it's constantly on a for sale not for sale basis. it'd be hard to give up but i'm willing to do it. i went to the rx7 because i've wanted one since i was 16, and i know i like rare and unique things, i used to ride street bikes before turning to one. I'm turning 20 in a few months, i make an average of about $350 a week, considering i have no major expenses other than monthly car payments and cell phone bills, since i live with my parents. I'll admit that i struggle sometimes with money, but it's because something stupid will come up, like recently i dropped my friends digital camera so i bought her a $360 replacement for it. There's no doubt i'll be turning back to a 7 once i get settled in my own house and start my life.
