Intake setups and noise for old guys :)
Hey everybody -
Looking into various intake systems. I was wondering how some of the aftermarket intakes, like the Apexi intake, deal with air pump and blowoff/CRV noise. I know many of them route the plumbing back into the intake, but I was wondering how obnoxious they are .
I'm helping another local FD guy out with his car, and he's wanting to do some modifications. He's an older guy and not really wanting the big noise and wooshes and what not .
Any good options for "quiet" intakes?
Input is mucho appreciated!
Thanks,
Dale

Stock airbox with adamc's duct will perform as well as any aftermarket intake out there. Only reason to remove the stock airbox IMO is if it must go away to make space for something else (an ic for instance). Nothing else is near as quiet either.
I'm another one of the few people who doesn't need to hear his car whoosh, foosh, moo or whistle in order to know he's driving a fast car. I like cars that kick butt quietly

Only thing is he'll likely be going with a larger IC that would need a smaller intake setup than the stock airbox.
Are there any aftermarket intakes that are quiet?

Well if he is modding the car:
The M2 intake box should be just a quiet as the stock air box and at the same time it will allow room for a larger intercooler. If he is not gonna go crazy with boost. Have him use the stock BOV as it can be bleed off to the box (just like stock).

Yeah, definitely sticking with stock BOV. But, I didn't think M2 was around or selling parts any more....?

The PFS intake is very quiet compared to most and will allow you to run most any intercooler. You will only slightly hear the air pump moo and ACV/CRV whoosh. It will have to be modified for use without the PFS intercooler.

PFS sounds good, but good lord - $500 for an intake? That's getting a bit nuts.
Anyone have the Apexi intake? Wondering how the noise is on that guy...

you can look for them used. post a WTB in the parts section.
I modified my stock airbox like the adam_c mod that everyone refers to and its nice and quiet. I briefly ran an a couple of K&Ns on the hard pipes and the noise was very annoying for my tastes.
I briefly had an M2 box and thought the fit sucked ***.
Why don't you do the adam_c thing till he decides on an intercooler.

Go to the for sale section.
Some dude was selling an M2 intake last week.

I'm selling the Pettit intakes minus the heatshield. Those will fit with any intercooler. I never got bothered by the sounds they made. I actually wanted something with a little more sound.

You can do your own mod on the stock airbox too...for nearly nothing.

All these stock mods are great - but as noted, no good for a fmic or vmic setup
I have the apexi and the BOV is quiet enough to be 'okay', the acceleration whistle is only mildly annoying, but the moo is horrible - as soon as the snow goes away, I'm actually going to re-install the whole thing and see if I went wrong somewhere (here's hoping...)

(The reason I am switching intakes is the reason that anyone who owns a PFS intake/SMIC combo is aware of -- it's a friggin PITA to work on the car! The system works great as do the individual components, but you have to remove the intake to remove the IC and that's not real cool for me anymore! )

I have one with a completely open exhaust. I hear the swoosh (stock BOV) when I clutch in to change gears and I often hear the airpump (ERRRR) noise about the first 30 min or so I have the car running. Not as loud as the midpipe but it can be annoying.

For those complaining about the mooing sound, has anybody tried cutting out the muffler part of the stock airbox and hiding it down under the mess somewhere so you don't hear/see it? The stock box has a separate section with stuff in it to muffle most of the sounds.
I removed my stock box (with adam_c style mod from robinette/damian) this weekend just because I didn't want to deal with taking it off and on anymore. Everytime you do anything to this car you need to remove the airbox and most of my clips are broken by now...

I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but you can still mount a sizeable SMIC with the stock airbox in place if you are willing to move the battery.

An easier solution:
Thanks to damian

Damian always has good ideas; we just reconnected my airpump (the connector wasn't fully together) and the mooing started to begin. I'll try Damian's SOS thing Oh yeah, and my Pettit intakes aren't that noisy . . . if you can get past how ugly they look lol

I think everyone is missing the whole point of this man going with an aftermarket intercooler. Moddin the stock air box will only be a short term deal. If you just want to get it over with I WOULD NOT go with the apexi intake. I chose to go with it because it was one of the cheaper ones out there, but you get what you pay for. I havn't heard anyone else complain about them but with mine, the pipes that come off of the casting fall and break out very easily so you mise well pull the bastards out and jb weld them back in or something. My fitment was also ****, the bottom air filter smashes against one of the hoses coming from the raidiator and the filter is all bent and what not. Also the noises coming from it might not be the liking of an older man. When the motor revs down you hear the air pump wich is pretty loud, you can definitly hear the stock bov and when people ride with me some will ask if somethings wrong with my damn car.

afterburn - thanks for the post, i've seen that solution in damians thread and may try it. although personally i just don't like putting gardening equipment in my car if i don't have to...
