Question Installing rebuilt turbos, have a few Q's!

Next week we'll be installing some rebuilt turbos in my buddies rex. My question is, what else should we plan on doing while tearing everythin apart to get the turbos swapped? Wouldn't it be smart to go ahead and get a downpipe on and replace all the vacuum lines? He just bought the car. It's a 93 touring w/82,xxx miles. The turbo seals are gone as he is leaking and burning oil but still holding a little boost. Turbos are on the way, I just wanted to see what else to plan for. I know it's gonna be a whole lot of fun!! Yeah right!

Who rebuilt the turbos for you? How much? Warranty? I have to rebuild mine soon so I'd like to know what my options are.

I'm not sure who. I'll find out tonight. It was someone local here in St. Louis though, but they only charged like $850 or something cheap. The guys whose shop we will be using(he's a ford guy) has used them many times and they cut him a good deal. I'll let you know exactly who and how much tomorrow.

probly should do the down pipe, i mean ur gonna have the stock pos off so it will be just part of puttin it back to gether...u should port the waste gate if u ever plan on goin mp..its easier to do it now than if u get creep pull them again...other than that its very strait forward....just remember all the gaskets...should take roughly 4 hrs to pull and re-install...if ur adventerous go for the vac lines..but some people say its almost better to pay someone 500bones to do it...

how do you go about porting the wastegate, and should we just order the gaskets from a mazda dealer or is there a better source? I think we're doing a dp at the same time, at least that's what I recommended.

Turbo replacement

Yep, you need to do the downpipe while your at it as the precat probably contributed to the turbo failure with that kind of milage on it. Clogged, holding way too much heat so on a....... if you haven't done the silicone hoses now might be a good time to get to the hard ones while you have theturbo's off. Hope this helps. Jack

Downpipe was added a few years back... silicon hoses were added about a month ago... not 100% sure they are all in the right spots though... jc

well all the gaskets in there are metal, so u only need to replace them if thir fucked up...+their like 40-50 a piece gaskets....
to port the wastegate u have to seperate the front turbo from the holder...its like 4-5 12mm bolts....then open the wg and either have amachiene shop bore it out to 1.24(i think) or take a die grinder with a carbide de-buring bit to it and makke the hole the same size as the flapper.....if u get creative u can port the manifold, and housings...but its alot of time and work...make shur u wear earplugs and a dust mask

Again, where, and how much for the rebuilt turbos?

Does anyone know if the RX-7 store rebuilt turbos are for the service, or can you just buy the turbos from jason out right? My turbos are FUBAR and I'm looking to get at least a halfway decent set.

If it were me, I'd replace all the gaskets, since it would be a bitch to tear everything apart again if one of the old one leaks. A good source is Mazdaformance. They can get you dealer parts for like 25% off, and they're very cool to deal with. As far as replacing the vac hoses, you should at least replace all that you can get to with the turbos off, but most of them are under the extension manifold, and thats a completely separate job.

I pulled this post up from almost a year ago, so everything is pretty old (see post date). I looking to get an answer on rebuilt turbos. I really want to know if anyone has purchased the rebuild from the RX7store.

BNR sells rebuilt twins for $750 including a ported wg, thats the best price I've found so far. I think the RX7store is $800 but doesnt include the wg porting I'm pretty sure

Brian at BNR does all his own work instead of sending it out so he can do it cheaper.
