install oil temp guage sender??

My Apex power fc always shows my car running hot. So, I am installing
a water and oil temp gauges to keep a better eye on the engine. I have
installed the water temp sender.

- Where is a good location for the oil sender
- Any thoughts on gauge palcement. I already have a boost guage
on the A-pillar. I don't think I would be able to see to the left
very well if I got a dual or triple A-pillar guage holder.

Thanks,

sean

I just mounted my 2 1/8inch oil temp gauge to right of steering column in dash (left of cig lighter). Sorry no pictures taken of installation. Rotated gauge such that 195 deg F is straight up, gauge is a 270 angle range, full sweep autometer ultralight. Top half of gauge is visble thru steering wheel .. all one needs to see, and besides just need as an over temp indication (i.e. above 195 in oil pan per Mazda Motorsport)

The absolute easiest mounting oil temp sender is the VDO unit. It replaces the stock oil drain plug. It measures the temp of the oil in the pan.

I have the VDO sender in the oil pan plug + the gauge. It works great, is cheap, gives you an upper bound on the oil temps, so you have some cushion/warning if something is getting too hot.

GAUGE

SENDER

PIC OF GAUGE IN MY CAR (from left to right is boost, water temp, oil temp)

Hope this helps

I'm not sure.... If you can figure out what the sender's resistance is and then figure out what range the gauge uses you could probably get a VDO sender to work with an autometer/progauge gauge or vice versa... I'm not sure though

any other places to put it? is there an adapter that can be used to stick the sender in the stock location? My plan is to buy the prosport oil pressure gauge to replace the very inaccurate stock unit.

you could try this. not sure if it works though, or if there will be room. this is the route I would go, but I'm going to do pressure instead.

I have the Sard oil block adapter.. it has "fins" on the outside of it to supposedly aid in cooling.. and it's blue.. (as is most of Sards stuff)

i'm also using a lower profile greddy sports filter as well which makes installation and removal a breeze.. dont even need to remove anything just reach in piece of cake..

one word of warning tho.. the Defi Temp sensor is very long.. so I had to make a spacer for it to work with the block adapter..

I basically drilled through the larger bolt "plug" that it comes with.. threaded and tapped it and screwed the sensor into that..

Place the 1/8" sender in the stock banjo bolt at the oil line return to the filter block. I did all three of my fds this way. Gives the temperature of the oil going into the lubrication pasages.

you want to know the temperature of the oil in your motor not the temperature just after it has gone thru your coolers.

mazda has kindly created a perfect spot for your sender... you just have to remove the oil level sensor, gut it and weld whatever bung is appropriate.

i chose an FJO temperature sending unit and gauge. i also run an FJO digital oil pressure gauge that replaces the often malfunctioning mazda unit. oil pressure is loggable if you wish.
