I'm tired of giving free advice...

Re: I'm tired of giving free advice...
<edit> recycled joke removed
I think it's poor form to ask for help in PMs, since folks like myself can't read about it or search for it later. It's a big loss to have someone as good as TJ writing out personal answers to be used (ignored?) by one person and lost to the bitbucket forever.
I would return any such PM with "post in the forum".

I'd like to quote a PM you once sent me:
"Simple fact. Everywhere there are chiefs and there are indians. On this forum, at this point in time, I'm a chief. If you don't like the way things are run, you may hang out at http://www.nopistons.com/forums/ . There are plenty of FD owners who post over there."

If I only did things in this world in anticipation of something in return, I would be an extremely disappointed individual.
I'm not big. Really, it's not as much as how I was raised, but more as to what I believe.

There should be a walkthrough to searching and finding info on your own when you register an account. Possibly a link to a newbie getting flamed for asking the same old questions

I keep waiting for someone to PM me and say I can help you with your problem but that never happens. I am beginning to think you guru's arn't that guru. Ow and I will tell you "Thank You" if you can actually help and if you live close enough I will even buy you a beer.

As of right now my inbox has 738 messages in it, I pretty much keep all my inbox messages and like you I wish I'd saved my outbound as well.
I lost all my PM's during one of the old forum crashes, if it wasnt for that I'd prob have over 1000.
Basically, I guess what I'm saying is I feel your pain. From time to time I pm people to ask a quesiton about something I'm not famiar with, but I usually try to follow up with a "thank's for all the help".

I just don't help others just to receive praise. I offer what help I can because I decide to. I don't expect anything in return. If someone thanks me for the assistance, they are a better person for doing so.

Thank You Majik.
Honestly Turbojeff, If you don't want to help, don't.
But, to sit around and post silly little messages like " I am not helping anymore becasue no one thanks me." makes you sound like a cry baby, and in my opinion is a just a waste of the valuable forum space.
If I offended you sorry. That is not my intention. But you should know how what you say sounds.
Now how about some help with my PFC?

I think one would have to be a saint to continue doing something with *no* recognition.

Psychologically I think it would be safe to say, however, that you wouldn't be doing it if you received zero recognition. You receive this, indirectly, by recognition from external people to the private message conversations but who are on the board day to day.

There are people who disagree with the way I do things (like Jonesboro) and people who agree with what I do. Do I appreciate the kind words that have been used in this thread about my efforts? Absolutely. Would I change what I was doing if people didn't like my efforts? Nope, I would just step down as a moderator and let someone else fill in.
Integrity. Believing in yourself and what you do.
You really don't know me if you think I'm doing this to puff up my chest.

If people (the majority) didn't like it, then I would just stop moderating, not change. If you believe in something, you should never change or compromise.
If their response was just apathetic, it wouldn't bother me. People can take my advice or suggestions and do what they want. I'm not going to get upset whether they do or don't as I had a choice whether I offered the advice/suggestion or not.

I think Mahjik has been a very fair mod, then again I've never had a run in with the S.O.B.
But seriously you have to be confident as well as a very "Just" person to Mod... and not get all "excited" about someone badmouthing you or yanking your chain...
I'm gratefull the forum is up and running, as well as it is.. and with as little spam as is possible... there are things I'd improve but those have nothing to do with the mods....
<---- Happy and gratefull Poster....

What I'm hearing from you Mahjik is that you don't say thanks for your B-day presents.
Otherwise to those that think that I just sit around and post silly little messages makes me sound like a cry baby... Well if you think that then fine, I don't care. Out of 2000+ posts almost everyone of them helps people out.
On PMs, I got a message from a mod about 6 mo ago asking me to delete some of the 1200 messages I had, I've probably had another 500+ since then...\
I like the forum and I like helping people in the public sections, no thanks needed. If you PM me, just acknowledge that you got the message...
Oh and I just got a cable modem last week, it rocks!

Asking for thanks and saying thanks are two completely different things. Giving praise and receiving praise are different. You give because you want to, not just so you can receive. I guess that's just a little of the Christianity coming out of me as it's always better to give than receive. I apply that to everything I do in my life, including posting on internet message forums (as I also frequent computer tech and programming forums).
