Im starting to hate my FD
Yes I am starting to hate my FD, ever since i got it 3 months ago nothing but bloody problems both due to the car and myself!!!
1st of all it turned out the car had a major crack on the secondary turbo, so I fitted a second hand unit myself then the (carbon) gasket I used blew out after 3 days..... so I got the proper metal gaskets and re-fitted the turbo units! only to have it start blowing again after a week! so I got back under and re- tightened the studs only to find its now blowing again!
I think the studs i used were not High tensile steel, therefore they are stretching with the heat and on contraction leaving the unit blowing!!! b@stard!!!
Also the car is smoking a little on set off???? is this normal?? but its inly done 15 thou since it was fully re-built! I know they burn a bit of oil but should I be able to see it? its a fuel smelling black whisp of smoke?
Then I find out I can even fit a free flow exhaust without messing the boost system up and having theb car re-mapped with a £400 new ECU and probably a boost controller!!!! is this true?
I have had the fun of the car kicked out of me!!!! may sell it for a r32 skyline next year unless things seriously pick up a bit.
Just had to have a moan, get it off me chest LoL
Im 27 on monday so happy birthday to me! (so old)
cheers

and you can put an exhaust to help the car breathe easier. but, you will need to get a boost controller to keep it at 10psi till it gets re-mapped to run higher boost.
and i know how you feel, everyone does. just wait till you have all the odds and ends figured out. you will be very happy with your fd when that time comes...

An old performance car is going to have issues, even the all mighty boat of a car, the skyline. Any car you buy and plan on doing performance mods will require ecu changes and tunning. I would much rather have an FD than a skyline( if your going to buy a skyline just get some American muscle).

Sorry to say it, but all your problems are stemming from your inexperience.
ON a turbo car, especially a rotary, you NEED to use OEM exhaust components around the turbos. Those hunks of cast iron get hotter than you would expect. OEM studs, gaskets, everything. This isn't the kind of vehicle you go to the corner auto store to get parts for.
Sounds like someone is trying to rip you off. You need to keep an eye on boost levels and regulate them, but all you need for that is a gauge and a manual boost controller. Keep it to 10 PSI and have fun with the A/M exhaust.
BTW, where did your turbo crack? I've never heard of that happening, unless the manifold cracked so badly that it caused a leak.

Yep my bad with the studs!!!
It cracked on the small 8mm stud going onto the turbo m/fold also the wastgate seat was totally destroyed??
Ok guys so what boost controller can you recomend?
Do they fit inline with the boost hoses to the actuators? like a bleed valve?
I fully understand the working and boost control system on a single turbo setup as I have owned and tuned a turbo renault 5 sprint car for 8 years, however im just getting to grips with the twin turb on the Rex.
I have noticed my boost pattern is 10 then 5 (5 if im lucky) and then 8? Im sure this is dut to the de-cat down pipe, RE induction kit and not being set up to suite? (it was on the car when i got it!)
Any advice?
Cheers lads

looks like you did not do enough research before buying FD. I'm waiting for mine to arrive in about month and a half and i spent days reading and reserching here as well as on other internet based resources.
I knew you were not from USA because you want to get skyline. how many kilometers your FD has on speedometer?

The boost controller is just a needle valve that goes between the wastegate and the manifold. I can't say I recommend one over the other since they all do the same thing and quality isn't much of an issue since it's such a simple device. You would probably be safe just to buy a cheap one off of ebay. I made my own with a valve from the hardware store.
The boost pattern is due to the lag while the secondary turbo spools up. Sounds like you may have a boost leak though, 10-8-10 is a normal boost pattern.
By the way... I not only live near New York, New Hampshire, and 5 minutes from the town of New Britain, but the whole area is called New England... what a bunch of losers we are

Still in my honeymoon stage
Have had my FD for three months and of course I have been to a mechanic about 5 times all for minor things.
Have about 320 rwhp at 14 pounds of boost. And loving it.
