i'm a newbie help me out

i'm thinking of getting a 93 rx7 in a couple of weeks and i wanted to ask you guys here a question, some ppl over here where i live are telling me that the rx7 is a really unreliable car, then when i asked them what they mean they can't explain it, can you guys tell me if this car is really unreliable and why, oh and another thing how much horses can the rotary engine on the rx7 actually make if i mod the hell out of it

I'd do a search for FAQ's like this, many prospective buyers post this stuff....

For a quik run through though....

Yes, some are unreliable, just like any car you need to take care of it. Except you need to take meticulous care...like oil change every 3000mi, no exceptions....and it helps if you know a little about tools....

It just depends on who had the car and how they took care of it, but it's certainly not a car you just get in, drive and shut off, there are little things that need to be done, but they're all fun.

As for power, most people end up with about 320WHP and a mid 12ET, with your basic performance upgrades. Not many go past that.

Then you have the single turbo nuts, and those guys get anywhere from 400WHP to beyond the moon and are good for 11sec and under ET's....

Thats the infamous "Unreliable" curse that the all rx7's have. Esp the 3rd gen. Everyone that doesnt know anyhting about these cars dont have any idea what they are dealing with and whats going on with these cars. the horror stories start with someone probably just like you falling in love with the car.. saving money and eating ramen for 4 years straight... and then finally buying a 7500 dollar rx7 that hasnt been wrecked... But generally you get what you pay for with these cars... and so the story goes... he drives for about a week showing it off to everyone, doesnt do anyhthing to it, may be a cat back, but he doesnt know what to do with it, doenst watch boost, doesnt have water temp, over heats, blows a seal, etc etc.... millions of things can go wrong.... so he get a quote for a repair and cries as his car is junked.... and tells everyone to not buy one cause they are unreliable. Well, its all about the owner, i did research for about a year or two, read on the forum talked with other owners, learned about the car before buying it. It will be like any other car. If you care for it, it will live. Im still on the 93 stock motor with 85k miles and still going strong. this is a kinda car that you have to LOVE inorder to own it, that or a HUGE bank account hehe. But all those stories you hear about unreliability are from bad experinces. and i only generalized it with my story, cause typically that's what happens.... the Rx7 is a very sensitive car. If you are willing to care for it than it is a car for you. But again to Each his own.
Hope i didnt offend anyone
Hope this helps some also

I don't think I would use the word "unreliable", more like "tempermental". I do the normal maintainance but yet I still have problems that arise with the car. Most of my problems though are from Mazda mechanics.

There are some things to consider when getting a FD:

1. If you aren't a mechanic yourself or willing to learn, you'll need to locate a good rotary mechanic in your area. This is the problem I have right now. Every time Mazda touches my car, they cause more problems then what I had them fix in the first place.

2. Car insurance. I don't know how old you are, but if you are under 25, you should get a quote from your insurance company first to see if they will insure the car and if so, how much are you looking at paying.

3. Daily driving. Most people get around 12-13 mpg with their FD's. Premium gas in my area is around $1.70 per gallon, if you are putting on some serious miles per day, you'll be paying a ton in gas per month.

4. Lastly, if you do get and FD and have problems, will you have something else to drive while it's getting repaired? Will you have the money for parts to have it repaired?

Good luck.

the rx7 is a very reliable car, just th many of them have been beaten up by crazy drivers like me. (but I take care of mine). SO far my 7 has been the most reliable car I haev ever owned, adn has cost em the least amoutn in maintenace. well except maybe foir the saab I had, that was ridiculously cheapr to maintain, bu it was also built liek a 1969 fiat.

ciao
