If you could have anyone rebuild your motor who would it be?
No this is not another "is there a good rotary shop in x-city" post. If you could have your FD engine built by anyone in the country who would it be and why?
I looked in the archives and did a search and could find no similar post. The reason I ask is because I am about to have a core sent to Pettit. I have heard some bad things about Pettit recently though that may change my mind. Anyone who has had good or bad experiences with a shop I would love to hear your story. |
kevin landers or BDC...bdc for his port work, kevin for his no-nonsense attitude. both are well known, high quality builders.

Extreme Sounds & Motorsports
Corey, The owner of Extreme, he is one of the most nice people I have met, I had to bring him my R1 because it was running strange, I had two other people look at it and they could not figure it out, I bring it to him and just a few days later he had it up and running! and you can really tell he love what he does! I have my car at his shop right now in NC and he is going to be building and porting my motor:icon_tup:

RnR rotary in Glendora :) Because I know their work and I trust them. I drive 140 miles to see those dudes.
|
whell im going to pettit for my first rebuild which is in 2 or 3 weeks.

Myself

I would think that Pettit is one of the premier builders. I have never heard anything negative (that was legitimate) about Pettit. Rotary Performance in TX is also a really good place as is Mazdatrix and Rotary Power here in CA. Not sure why you are sending your motor all the way out to FL when there a lot of good builders here in CA.
If I had to get my own personal motor done right now, I'd have to go with Goodfella since I know him personally and trust him a lot. |

i would have speedmachine performance do it. Dave Gibson seriously knows his stuff when it comes to the rotary. He might be a pain but he's a perfectionist when it comes to building.
They built the cars drift cars for Falken Tire and out of all the cars in Falken's lineup, imagine it, the RX7s were the only ones that didn't need a rebuild. They can cryo, port and treat whatever part you want...i just wish their website was working. They are located in Vista, CA. |

rebuilds
I would use kevin landers in Morristown TN, I have had 2 engines rebuilt there in the past year and he does A Super job and Also at A great price.
|
PFS in Maryland.
|
Without a doubt, Kevin Landers. :icon_tup:
|
+1 for myself. wish I had the room.
|
I do not know about porting or exteme/full build. For a good quality, reasonably priced overhaul that i can trust, i would have Rich from IR Performance do it. :icon_tup: I can tell he likes what he does.
|
go with one of the best. Mr rx7 tt (Chris Rogers)
You won't be disappointed. |
makers7 in hatsicahichi (think i spelt that wrong) Japan. They are the shit! i know you said in country but since i am out of country i couldnt really comment on that. Anyways the japanese guys at makers are amazing, and that is all they work on there is 7's
|
IR Preformance(aka Rich and Ihor) Gotta give them a good rep since they are building my engine right now with a large street port and no emissons  any way i can't wait to get my car back. These guys know there stuff and willing to help out in anyway with a smile on there face:) , I trust them with my baby and easy on the pockets(not mine since it was not a good core:squint: ).
I would like to learn myself but too lazy and have no moneys left. |
Thanks for the props guys. I couldnt do it without Ihor, we're a two man team :)
Oh, and I've heard great stuff about Chris Rogers as well :icon_tup: |

They do some nice work over at Makers. I visited their Fukuoka branch for a few days, and got to see them work. They are not really famous for their "parts", but their eye to detail is great. I test drove a 2001 Rx7 at Makers too :) I have replace almost all the stock interior parts, for new stock interior parts, through them for about 250$ |

I am pretty sure they do not build engines for the public, only sponsor'd cars and racing teams.
If we're dreaming why not dream for the best? haha:yum: :naughty: |

Cant believe no one mentioned amemiya's shop in japan lol.
But if i had to say in the US, it would either be PFS or IR performance. |
If it had to be serious work done, I would have Mr.Koseki from SCOOT or Mr.Kumaki from Top fuel racing do my whole motor. (at least for the type of stuff i like to do)
|
Myself unless you open up Japan as options
|
Kdrotary
I would say Dave at KDROTARY
Max |
Best motor rebuilder by far is Bruce Turrentine. Got my engine done several years ago and runs super well.
|
Ernst at RX7 World in N.C. built mine about a year ago. He seemed to be meticulous in his work. He isn't as well known as many on here, but his work and ethics are first rate. . . but a long way from San Diego!
|
RotaryResurrection.com, there really isnt anyone else I would trust to build the engines for all my FDs. There are plenty capable builders out there, however, few you can trust with a struggling economy and a market that is growing smaller by the day for these cars. Just too many horror stories of shops shutting down over the years. Dealing with Kevin@ rotary resurrection may not be for the faint of heart but you get great work every time.

Aw come on DJ.....after our cuddling on the couch, you don't trust me ?
|
The guy who owns this car. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...7&d=1198301605 I wonder if Rich does TII's. or RotaryResurrection http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...S/FDBanner.gif |

Myself. I can't trust anyone else, I almost got a job at a tire shop that also does alignments for the only reason, that I could do it myself. I can't stand anyone touching my car. Did the motor thats in my current FD and its the strongest motor I've had out of all 9 RX-7s I've had....
If I wasn't able to do it myself. Mike Janousek He did a motor for me and I was extremely pleased by it. I would go to him again without any doubt. |
Hard to believe nobody has mentioned Racing Beat, although I called a few years ago and was told they don't offer rebuild services. Still, they were (probably still are) pioneers when it comes to rotary engines in particular, it would be interesting to hear what they would put together if you handed them a big check and an empty engine bay.
There's a guy who goes by "Judge Ito" on another rotary forum, not sure where he works but it sounds like he's got a pretty good reputation as an engine builder. He posts all kinds of cool photos sometimes. Also, Paul Yaw's website has some very interesting tech articles, I'd like to hear more about his work. |
Dave at KDR is awesome.
If I still lived in the Mid-West; either Banzai or IR. Living here in CA, I'd have to say Mazdatrix hands down. |
Ihor and Rich at IRP in Clifton, NJ. It doesn't matter where I live in the country, they are the ONLY people I'd trust to build my motors.
|
Mandeville Racing
|
Who has the dirt on Mazdatrix? :)
|
.
|
Felix Wankel himself!
If I could have anyone rebuild my motor it would be Mr. Wankel himself, because how cool would that be? And I would have the most bragging rights on, and off, of this forum.
|
Julia Roberts !! The motor would never run.....but as long as I could watch who'd give a shit !
Bob ( UK ) |
Brian Hinson.
|
Actually, If I could get Jesus to rebuild my motor, Id be cranking "Jesus built my hotrod" like 24/7
|
Myself, for obvious reasons.
|
There are so many good builders scattered around the country... I cant believe that there have been so few mentions of people like Ray at PFS, Jim at JPRImports, Chris at Banzai, Sean and many others.. I know Ray and Jim have 9 second street cars running out of their shops....
|
I think anyone can build a 'regular' motor but when you start crossing 600HP that's when experience comes in. If I don't see any 600+HP / 9/10sec cars coming out of the shop that are running RELIABLY, then I would not go with them. I would chose the shops that have experience building high HP motors.
I would also go with a shop that can handle tuning. I think it's ideal to have the same shop that built your motor, tune your car. If the motor does blow because of a tuning issue, you don't want to be caught in the middle of a battle of the tuner blaming the builder or the builder blaming the tuner. Lastly, choose a registered shop in the event something does not go the way it should, you can take them to court if needed. Backyard wanna be mechanics (like myself LOL) are great if you want to save money, but if you are paying TOP dollar, head to a registered shop. So who would I chose? PICA motors baby! :) Anthony |
