I have a question to all who own and built their cars.

Agreed. If someone I already know and respect asks what the car cost, I tell them. If someone asks what I would sell it for, I make up a number that is about $5000 more than I think it would cost me to replace the car with another that's in similar (or better) condition.

No - we don't all agree. Seriously, you guys must have very little worry in your lives if this question bothers you. It is asked out of curiosity with no malice, in my experience. If it were culturally inappropriate, then it is unlikely that people would ask it all the time.
Normally when I hear people answer those questions, it really sounds like they are bragging about how much money they have to blow. I would prefer to keep that info to myself. I like to keep the topic focused on my ride, not my wallet.
Then again, that's just my preference, doesn't matter what I have going on with my life, really nobody's business..

I mean people ask me what size turbo am I running or what I have done I quickly can have a 10 minute conversation with a stranger. But when I get asked that question it really turns me away from speaking to the person.
Everyone that knows me know I can talk for hours so I am not a rude person I just dont like to explain to someone what I have dumped into the car.
Plus people that asked me are usually "tunerz" I go to rotary meets and gathering and not 1 person asks me how much I paid for my car or dumped in it.

lol....I just tell people who ask things like this the truth because it always...ALWAYS ends up with the second question of, "so....you want to sell it?"
So I say, "I paid about $15,000 in 2000." Then the question. Then, "I won't sell it for less than $40,000 today." Then the dropped jaws and the "Uh...no ****????"

From: FL-->NJ/NYC again!
I usually say--- "I've replaced about 90% of the OEM components, and have lost track of the money spent. Not really something I think about.... although I do often think about how damn happy I am with the car on track "

I get the question all the time. It's an unusual car and I'm alot older than the average import owner so people are curious. Like others I'll just tell them what I paid for it years ago and I'm not sure what I've spent since. Since it's a hobby it's the truth. I don't keep a running tab. Some guys my age buy Harleys, some buy bass-boats...and they probably wouldn't know either.

I have to say this question doesnt bother me at all. I just tell them how much i payed for it when I purchased it. Then ill add "and another (x amount) in mods". In my experience people are just curious how much it would run them to get something similar.

I had a great fast and the furious moment last week at a light. Guy pulls up in a newish stock civic and asks me, "hey you wanna sell it how much you want for it", so I figured it would be the best time to act like the guy in the ferrari, but not so smug, so I said "You think you can afford it?". And the guy responds, "I'll give you $10k right now". I laughed and said back "$10k? Not even close, you got a long way to go buddy". The guy then seemed to get angry that I laughed at it and he shook me off with his hands and put his window up without responding.
I love it when people ask you ridiculous things like that, and then get mad at you when you don't give them what they want.

LOL... Just got asked that yesterday. Great thread btw.
I usually return with a question. "originally or total?"...followed by "and a couple hundred hours of work." Most people that ask about my car I usually end up popping the hood for and they immediately realize it is no where near stock anyway.
I don't mind the question so much. If I didn't build it, then it may bother me. But because I did everything myself it's fine. Lets face it, our cars are icon's of ourselves & what we love. The fact that I finally own my FD is enough to be proud. Let alone be blessed enough to make the money I do allowing me to build it how I like.
God Bless America!!
