I have a question to all who own and built their cars.

I like to pretend i don't know anything about the car. It ends annoying conversations faster and hopefully minimizes the likelihood that someone follows me home and tries to steal it later. Sometimes I'll say its my girlfriend's car and i dunno much about it other than it rides really rough and the AC doesn't work.

There's also a scene from that Adam Sandler movie, Bedtime Stories. Damnit, I can't find a clip, but basically, Sandler (in his beat-up pickup) pulls up next to a guy in a Ferrari (I think) and the conversation goes something like this:
Sandler: Do you mind if I ask-- how much is a sweet ride like that?
F-guy: Thanks. Actually, you'd be surprised, it's quite affordable.
Sandler: Really?
F-guy: Yeah, in fact if you saved everything you earn for the next 30 years, you might have enough to buy one of my mufflers. [followed by F-guy and hot blonde laughing at Sandler, then driving off]

It depends on the context, but I think you guys are being too sensitive. Some people have a genuine curiosity about what's involved in buying, owning, and/or modifying an FD. Most people are not "car guys" so they really have no concept of what is involved and they don't mean offense. Brushing off this question really can make you look like a "more than you can afford pal" guy.
This is a good question.

I just tell them what i paid for it. When asked about how much i have into the car i make a rough guess. I'm not offended i'm proud of the car and what i've done. If i wasn't i wouldn't have the car.

Best story I used once was ... "it's an Italian exotic, and the total cost to import, license and restore this classic was over a hundred grand". haha. some people actually believe that ****.
although one time, some teenage kid said, "no its not, its a RX7". So I said, "oh, you obviously saw Fast n Furious... if not for that movie, our FD's would be even less known to the public... I mean puberty-challenged.

I am with Montego on this one. I usually answer the question with what I paid for the car several years ago, followed by the "I don't really want to know what I have spent on it". I have a rough guess, but it is better for me to not know the real number. It is just unnecessary.
Though if some random person comes up and asks the question and I get that poor feeling in my gut I avoid the question or provide a really ignorant answer in such a way that they believe me. For fear someone will try and follow me home to either carjack the car there or on the way (forcing me to utilize my cc license) or try and steal the car at some point while I am at work. Maybe I am just paranoid, but better safe than sorry, I am really attached to my FD..
I also do find the question inappropriate to ask. But I guess that is just how I was raised. I do not ask other people how much they paid for something. If I want to know how much something costs, I just look for that item/similar item for sale. Plus then you get an accurate figure of what that item costs at that moment. To me it is just like asking someone how much their salary is...

I think we can all agree it's a pretty inappropriate question that usually gets asked by people who can't appreciate the car anyway. I get this question a couple times a week and I can really **** someone off quick when i tell them what i paid for mine. I don't usually tell the kids what i paid for it, but the older men who really know what the car is I will tell so they know what a steal i got. 1200 whole dollars is what i paid for mine.

I bought my car last year around Nov. last year and I try to keep track of all my expenses but its hard to really I think I spent around 3k or so so far on the car and originally bought it for 9k.
I dont like when people say how much you spend on it and I say like 3k and they look at it and it looks like nothing has been done to the car. Although I have done no exterior mods besides a R1 lip.

No - we don't all agree. Seriously, you guys must have very little worry in your lives if this question bothers you. It is asked out of curiosity with no malice, in my experience. If it were culturally inappropriate, then it is unlikely that people would ask it all the time.

I've never been asked that question from the general public as my car was mostly stock looking when I was driving it around years back. Now with the engine swap and body kit added, I'm still not driving it around until it's finished. I only test drive is at night on back roads so no one sees it in it's primered state. I guess those questions will start to come out as soon as I debut my project in completed form.

Oh man I had my car a couple of years prior to FnF and let me tell you it was pure bliss. Hardly anyone had an idea of what it was, as only the true car guys knew. It was the norm to see pedestrians (as I was in a stop light) mouth to the person next to them "what kind of car is that?"

I get asked this question all the time too. I don't really mind it, but I wouldn't ask someone that kind of a question. I answer with I lost track which is pretty true.

I actually get this alot. I hate when people who have no appreciation ask but if they are legitimately interested I have no problem. As stated above, you don't want to give someone the wrong impression about how expensive these cars are to own. And as a 19 year old, when you say the actual number, people naturally assume your parents payed for it. THAT pisses me off. I literally work the exact same job as you.. the reason I can afford this and you can't is because I don't slam a flat of beer and 10 packs of smokes every week. As a student especially, don't make an awful lot, I only work like 4 and a half months a year but pretty much every spare penny after school costs, insurance, and some money put into savings (which I'm sure will go towards a rebuild lol) is put towards the FD (and the girl ) I know what I want and I put myself in that direction. If you want an FD at this age, you have to sacrifice weeklong benders and getting smashed every night. If you want all that, the nice folks at Honda have created the civic.

I usually tell the the price I originally paid, then mess with them.
"I paid 6,000 bucks, and it's from the Mid '90's. How much did you pay for that Cayman S (that I just mopped the track with)?"
I don't bother telling them about the wheelbarrows full of cash that I throw at it every paycheck.
