I have a question to all who own and built their cars.
Ok I have been building and modifying rotaries for 11 yrs now and theres still one question that I get pissed off easily about when I am asked. Here it goes..
"HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY FOR YOUR CAR"
I get asked that question atleast 2 times a week from people.
First, unless I purchased it 100% show car status then I would input a price. Second if you take the price of your avg FD and add all the money you drop in it will that count. And lastly figuering out new ways to explain to someone how much you dropped in your car when in fact its none of their business.
another side note those that ask me are driving some beat up tuned car and dont know 90% of the parts you install anyways.
So I just want to hear your guys response to the "How much did you pay for your car" question

I tell the truth. 21k 13 years ago...
When they ask how much I've spent on it (which is quite rude) my reply for the most part is 'I don't even want to know'. But once in a while when I'm in a bad mood I actually do say 'Thats a bit personal don't you think?'

true but what gets me is that they assume you bought it like that, heres another example
say I bought a FD for $5000 and I dropped $20,000 in a span of 4 yrs and some *** hat quickly assumes you bought the car as is, wouldnt it **** you off I know its something dumb but its a peev of mine.
Maybe I am just getting old. But I still look 17yrs old

Well Alex, My car is a prime example of that. I really dislike that question, it is really rude to ask that. It seems like all the guys that like cars, mostly inexperienced honda, vw, evo, and wrx owners care more about how much i have dropped into my FD then how it performs. I have put enough money into my car to make most people cry.
Especially since it isn't really that pretty right now. Imagine the ridiculous amounts of cash I have thrown into it and I still have crappy interior and exterior... I guess my priorities are just different. I will eventually start working on the visuals, but I really like having my car perform better than most other cars on the road.

I've never had anyone ask me about the cost of my FB. Could be because I'm a girl? The question I'm always asked is if I had my car restored. I just tell them that I'm the original owner and it never stopped looking like it's brand new.
As for the rude question, Alex, I would just ask them if they're writing a book... and maybe they should skip that chapter!

gotcha Alex... Well honestly I get that too, but I dont mind it because I built my car with the intention of not looking modified. Well at least to the people who are uneducated with fd's.
Usually the conversation that follows after I tell them that I bought it 13 years ago is that they make a comment on how it doesnt look that old. And that is when I say that I have changed some parts of the exterior. The rude people continue to ask how much I have put into it.

Go buy a built car, you wont hear the end of it. "he bought it, didnt build it, he didnt do anything yadda yadda" I take it kind of negative, Just continue the car's build and enjoy/appreciate it. though the only people who have gave me that are internet drift kids with beatupdrift cars. I always wondered, if those said people where to sell their own cars, would they **** on the new owner for buying a built car? I guess you gotta be beating the **** out of a car to get respect for buying it built. lol
To your question, honestly it depends on the person asking. If they seem really enthusiastic about it, I could make a guess assumption on how much market value of parts was into it.
I honestly dont mind telling people. Its just those people who say "oh thats alot, i wouldnt spend that kind of money" that are annoying. The ones who wouldn't spend $5 on premium shampoo lol
I didnt build my rx7 , but built my prior car 240 so Im familiar with this.

I actually started a whole spreadsheet, catagorized with everything I had done and had planned to do and tossed in every little part and labor costs associated (if applicable).
I quickly realized I should delete said sheet and never think about it again as it was quicky becoming a jaw dropper.
That said, $15k purchase in 2002 and as others have said, I stopped counting afterwards.

The RX-7 doesn't get out much, but I literally got asked this question yesterday in the NSX and it happens about once a week...granted it isn't modified, but still. Worst thing is...you always know when that question is coming.
I just started making up numbers.

I just tell them straight out I bought the car for x and put in y afterwards. y is lower than the actual number. I haven't got the exact total number but if people knew what the real number was, they'd think I was crazy, even if it is true. To be honest, I don't even want to know the real number .
I see where you are coming from Alex. It is kind of insulting in a way and undermines the effort that was put into the car when someone asks how much you paid for it assuming you bought the car like that. As cool as a new Ferrari or Astons are, I still respect the guy who restored that old Celica more and hold the Celica in higher regard. You know the Celica guy (or someone) had to have alot of time, patience and love to restore the car and in the end, time costs more than any amount of money. Time doesn't grow on trees. Money in comparison does.

It depends on the context, but I think you guys are being too sensitive. Some people have a genuine curiosity about what's involved in buying, owning, and/or modifying an FD. Most people are not "car guys" so they really have no concept of what is involved and they don't mean offense. Brushing off this question really can make you look like a "more than you can afford pal" guy.

Maybe Im alittle different than most of you guys but I dont find that Question rude or inappropriate.
Im with supernatant in a sense that when they ask I just tell them "I bought the car for x and put in y afterwards".
Plus for some of us the details are so minor people dont realize how much is really done to the car and they underestimate the money that goes into making them what they are.
I mean its not like the guy is asking whats your wife's favorite position in bed....

oh, and I usually just say what I bought it for, if they ask how much I've put into it, I just say "I don't know and I don't want to know." The questions don't really bother me. I figure the people that I care about already have a rough estimate and that's all that really matters.

A thing to note: The great majority of the population buys a car and never modifies anything. And out of those that do, the most they ever do is purchase aftermarket wheels. So for the vast population tearing into a car doesn’t even come to mind they see something they like. Taken that into account one can understand that naturally they ask how much did it cost, well like I said because modifying isn’t part of their reality.

I like to pretend i don't know anything about the car. It ends annoying conversations faster and hopefully minimizes the likelihood that someone follows me home and tries to steal it later. Sometimes I'll say its my girlfriend's car and i dunno much about it other than it rides really rough and the AC doesn't work.

There is generally nothing mysterious or secret about the price of a car. If it is new, the MSRP can be determined pretty easily, and, if used, KBB or the like can be used to determine its value.
Not sure why anyone would not want to reveal information that is pretty much public anyways, or be offended that it was asked. It is equivalent to the question "How fast is it?".
