ouch, did the same thing. Ray can get you a new handel, but you will loose the lock, unless your willing to toss some extra cash for te entire assembly. If you neeed to open ot now get a small flat screw driver and push the bar up thats behind the handle that broke off and it should open. I replaced the handel but chose to go cheap and leave it without a lock. Think the handel was 60 bucks or higher

Is that ray from Malloy Mazda?
Yup I broke mine off too. You'd think that for a 40k car, mazda would had made these components out of a more durable material.
Shoot my 71 ghia has had less broken parts (like these) that my Fd. And it's 32 years old!!!
Edit- Things I have broken on my FD: Door container cover, door handle, glove box handle, grill for the air conditioner, and that piece of plastic at the begining of the dash (right between the windshield and dashboard).
Things I have broken on my ghia: Convertible sun visor holder (plastic) and the sun visor arm that clips onto the holder. Everything else is made of metal...

Dude, get a small flathead and you can see where to push. Call www.rx7.com cause I got my handle for $12 from them and you can keep your lock. 93 is different from 94

yeah i have a 94 and i bought it with a broken handle. called up ray at malloy mazda and he shipped it to me real quick. i was able to reuse the same lock just by popping it out of the old piece and sticking it in the new handle. the entire glove box comes out by unscrewing only 2 screws. the whole job only took me 20 minutes. very easy.

so I decided to tackle this project today and the latch mechanism is literally loose within the glove box. I can fee how it works but whatever it has to do to unlatch the lock, i cannot seem to get it to work.
I unbolted the 2 bolts holding the glove box however I didn't get any more leverage.
Any tips?

SO the latch is completely loose and isnt attached to anything.
I have unbolted the 2 Torx bolts from the underside to undo the the glovebox to see if there was any more way to get any leverage.
Trying to pick at the latch but nothing works.

Unbolt the entire door from underneath, then you can unscrew the latch and handle from within IIRC.
Wouldn't be sure where to source a new latch. You'll do better to get a whole new door second hand, I think.

I also have a spare glovebox handle.
My main concern is the fact that the latch mechanism is literally just dangling in there. its not hooked up to the release mechanism at all.....

"...the trick is to take a very thin flat head screwdriver (or something similar), and press the brass piece visible on the back of the key barrel in towards the round plastic piece, and then push the barrel through. It's really quite simple, but not obvious until you study it."

Narfle-- I sourced a new latch from Tasca (huge dealer, east coast, legendary Ford dealer with huge racing legacy) off eBay for $18 delivered. Also works for 1995-97 Miata.
Boris-- I think you removed the wrong two screws. It's the two that screw directly on the silver metal bracket.
I started out with a easy project which was made difficult by my own carelessness. I had a broken latch and went to install the replacement by just opening the glovebox store. It's 3 screws... easy, right? Ummm...
Where I goofed was that I had not yet figured out how to remove the lock tumbler, so I installed the new latch assembly without the tumbler. In that process, I left off the cover and bracket that secured the lock tumber into the new latch assembly.
Bad mistake. Without that bracket in place, the latch does not work! I had to remove the bottom screws from the glovebox, which stayed in place, hanging by the closed latch.
After 30 Minutes of creative screwdriver use, i somehow pried the door open, and thus could correctly reinstall the latch.
Don't repeat my mistakes!
P.S. removing the lock tumbler takes less than 10 seconds if you follow the instructions above.

The glovebox latch mechanism shares similarities with the Ford Probe (1995-ish shape) and the GE platformed Mazda MX6 if that helps. I know this because my wife's Probe did exactly the same thing and busted and looks incredibly similar in its mechanism.

I finally managed to get mine open, and my suspicions were right. the latch mechanism somehow unbolted from the glovebox and was movie freely around inbetween the glovebox and the plastics.
I had removed the two torx screws that secured the glovebox to the framing to get some more leverage.
What a pain in the *** this is, and now I have searched some more and have come ot the conclusion that the only way to resecure the latch mechanism is to cut open the glove box, and then reglue/fiberglass it.
What an awful design that is.
