Hows this clutch disc look to you?

In the process of installing a lightened flywheel, took a look at my clutch disc and its got me wondering. The clutch is a Spec stage 1, with maybe 3,000 miles on it. I daily drive the car and it sees alot of stop and go traffic. I usually baby the car but the other night when shifting quickly into second gear, the clutch slipped pretty badly. Its the first time its done this. Now that I have the clutch off, please tell me what you think about the wear. It seems like its gotten hot as there are discolorations on the old flywheel.



Also, I have an extra clutch setup that came from Japan with my motor when it was sent to Banzai for rebuilding. It has minimal wear but is slightly different from the Spec clutch. I couldnt see any markings on it that would hint as to what clutch it is but is has only four springs (spec has six) and they are larger. What effect would this have to the clutch operation/feel if I were to swap them?

First off, ALL flywheels have heat marking. Period. It's nothing to worry about, it's normal.

Second, the only way to really see if a clutch is worn is to get a caliper and measure the thickness. They're like brake pads, when they get thin they need to be replaced.

The "mystery" disc has a Daikin stamp on it, I think the stock discs and Exedy discs are made by them. Regardless it's gonna be a quality disc, they make good product.

Really, the discs themselves are likely gonna be the same damn thing as far as grip is concerned and driveability. I'd probably run whichever of the two is thickest.

measure to the rivets, not overall thickness.

the pictures only tell us that you aren't at 0% yet.

spec is garbage, i would use the exedy disc.

If the disc slipped in any way, it needs upgraded.... period.

I agree with Karack, Exedy disc or an ACT. And as Dale said, get a caliper on it to measure the disc if you really want to re-use.

I personally love my ACT street/strip with HD pressure plate. Holding around 400whp with NO issues at all. Breaks loose my 285's into 3rd.

Thanks for the input guys. Unfortunately when I purchased this clutch I was working with a strict budget but that goes to show that one should never cut corners. I will use three exedy disc and report back.

That is the Exedy/Daikin OEM clutch disc, it looks like it has more life left than the Spec, but it is still just a used stock disc. Unless you want to get familiar with pulling your trans you might want to install a decent clutch. I think I remember advising against the Spec when we shipped you your engine.

The ACT ZX3-HDSS (or (ZX3-XTSS) is a great clutch that would work well with your setup. http://www.banzai-racing.com/store/9...lutch_kit.html

While it seems you have already selected the disc you're going to use, there can still be a difference between discs of this style. Look at the edge of the disc and look for wavy spring plates between the faces - this is called marceling. Stiffer marceling is used for higher torque.

Exedy or ACT in my opinion. I have never had any good experiences with Spec and we install a lot of clutches at the shop. Like said before, find out what the original thickness of the disk is supposed to be and measure it with a caliper.

Chris, I do remember you steering me away from the Spec clutch and I should have listened to you at the time. Now I am paying for it. I know at the time the spec was about 100$ less but now looking at my labor involved it equals out if not cost me more.

I chose to use the exedy disc and hope it does better. If not I will bite the bullet and get a known, proven clutch. I will also find a lift to use as trying to get the transmission back in lying on my cold garage floor sucks haha.

On a positive note, the 1" electric impact I borrowed from work made removing the flywheel nut a breeze. Its amazing what 750lb/ft of torque can remove.

See if there is a local equipment shop that can rent you a floor-type transmission jack.

Ended up being it after loosening the motor mounts and jacking the front of the motor up. Now just need to button it all up.

Ok, So I finally got everything back together. Had to adjust the clutch rod a bit but nothing major. Got ready for a test drive only to realize I now have no parking lights or cluster lights.

I don't want to start another thread about it. I searched and couldnt find any answers, a couple people have had similar issues but the threads end with no fixes posted.

First position on the headlight switch does nothing, second position gives headlights. All other lights work, windows, alarm, etc. This narrows it to the headlight switch. Any ideas before I yank the switch?

i just want to make sure, they have the HD pressure plate and the Xtreme one correct? i got the hd s/s and just hope that will be good for mid 400s when that time comes.
