Is it just me or the black gunk is standard automotive sealant and not hylomar?

Appears to be silicone for the coolant o-rings..... perhaps hylomar was used for the oil pan?

Tony Horton says..... You're doing it WRONG!

lol.

i read of hylomar to a oil pan story a while back; disastrous.

Im guessing it ran just fine to the owner before the coolant issue?

The way i see it it, its easier to get a few thousand mile on a rotary with a half *** build where a in a piston engine assembly makes or breaks the first start up.

the few miles most owners put on these engines makes it even easier for shops to get by on their half *** builds.

"i'd be curious to know the endplay..."

"other fun things were 4.8 thou endplay."

the oilpan was an amazing mess.
bolts were 30 inch pounds instead of 110. there was about an 1/8th inch of the "Wrong Stuff." i e black RTV as opposed to The Right Stuff which sets up like Shock and Awe. in addition, so the guy could use even more silicone there was an oilpan gasket which i don't use. needless to say the entire pan was coated w leaked engine oil. at least it wasn't rusting.

what is nice is that all the primary parts are (still) in great shape and it will make a really nice motor.

while this is all entertaining it truly is sad as the rotary is a killer motor when properly assembled, fixtured and tuned.

i was talking to Atkins yesterday about the motor and they said they get corner seals in backwards stories at least weekly, in spite of a pretty clear BIG PICTURE on the envelope???

hylomar on the pan gasket? .

i'll bet we are missing some really great engine stories.
