okay when your car is fully warmed up and after youve driven it shut it down and wait 5 minutes

then go out and check the oil level
the difference between the F mark and L mark is ~1 quart

I think you have lost over a quart for the oil light to be on and it's not good to drive the car with that much gone. I'd add half a quart right now and then drive it easy until its fully warmed up ~15 minutes and then check the oil level like I said

I think the difference between L and F on the dipstick is actually 1.8 qts. If the light is coming on, you are way low.

max I think that 1.8 is wrong

the first time I did an oil change I put in 5.8 quarts because that's what the manual said. But then I realized that it was for a dry engine and depending on how many and what type of oil coolers you have the car holds a good amount of oil so I ended up added about 3.5.

I have the duel r1 oil coolers on my touring and and when I'm half way between F and L I add half a quart and recheck the oil and it comes out perfect...any more and it's past the F. So that is where I got my measurement from and plus this is what I was told by the local 3d gen guys when I first got my car.

It's called check your oil once a week....damn.

The difference between the L and F marks is supposedly 1.7 L, but my experience has mirrored Snooks. Adding a half quart when it was halfway between L and F brought it to F.....

Unless the oil is in like a measuring cup dont expect the levels on the dip stick to be calibrated. Meaning what it takes to get halfway up the stick may not be what it takes to get to full.

If you are waiting till the oil light comes on you are like 2-3 quarts low on on a 5 quart engine, That is not good. The oil sensor is close to the bottom of the oil pan, so if the light comes on then you are really really low.

My suggestion to you would be to drive with at least a quart of oil in the car. If the light comes on pull over IMMEDIATELY and put the quart of oil in there. Then take it to get some oil. Also if you know your oil levels are going down on a regular basis you should be checking the oil levels frequently.

The reason the oil light comes on is not that your oil is low or at a certain level. Rather, it means that the oil pressure has dropped below a critical point.

Sure your oil is probably low, but your oil pressure is critical.

MAX According to the FSM it is 1.3L (1.5 qts) between L & F on the dipstick iirc

The OIL WARNING light on an FD (located in the oil press gauge) indicates low oil LEVEL not pressure, it is activated by a level switch mounted on the left side of the oil pan. there are also warning lights for WATER Level and FUEL Level located in their respective gauges.

the OIL light should come on at approx 1.5 qts low oil ( or just at the Add/Low mark on the dipstick)
