How Many FDs are Left???
#3
well, I know of at least 7 FD's in the Los Angeles area. Let's just say that there are about 7 more that I don't know about. Assuming that there are about 150 LA-like metropolitan areas in the US, and that each would have about the same number as LA, there would be 2100 FD's just in and around metropolitan areas only. This is very similar to the kinds of questions they ask in interviews. At least that's what I'm told since I haven't had too many of them.

I belive about a year ago that there was close to 5,000 left in the US. Does anyone know of someone who works at a DMV or something similar that can search the database of registered 3rd Gen rx-7s in the US? Then we would have to add a small percentage that is not registered (i.e race cars)

This is a very interesting topic, I would be really curious to see actual numbers. It would also be interesting to compare the numbers to some other rare cars. Honestly I see more Vipers than FD's on the road now days.

I have two red mint condition Fd's in my garage. I live in a very wealthy area by malibu beach and I see more Ferraries and lambo's than I see Fd's. This year I have only seen 2 silver fd's on the road. I think the 94 and 95's are getting realy rare. BTW does anyone have the exact numbers of how many fd's were sold in each year?

I asked this question when I first went to KDR (about 3 years ago). They said they used to get ownership lists from Mazda with about 12K names on it. The last list they saw (I think it was about a year before I met them) had less than 7K names. After 3 years of wrecks and trashed engines I bet there are about 5000-5500 at the most left. For god's sake they have told me about a least five cars that have been totalled within a month of getting lots of modification since then. And of those remaining cars, how many are engineless (waiting installs) in need of turbos, or other major repairs. How many nice FDs are on the road?

I met Cameron Worth of Pettit Racing in March 2002. He told me that he knew the results of a US wide vehicle registration check. He told me there were about 3,300 FD's registered. About 800 in Florida, 800 in Texas and 800 in California. The remaining cars were fairly evenly distributed around the rest of the states. I suppose there could be a few other cars which only see track duty etc. Still, they are pretty rare.
