http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...267_5_full.jpg After http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...267_7_full.jpg I have a polished UIM that I need to get installed. Other than that I'd like to get a better intercooler, polish the TB, get an efini y pipe, and replace some of the bolts that have rusted. |
^ 1st, I'd cover that hole in front of the SMIC (especially without a CAI). The IC needs airflow to work...

Back in 2002 I started off with a completely stock 93 Touring FD w/all the options.

Changed the headlights, interior, diffusor, spoiler, etc. etc. etc. Should be completed in 1 month or so.... |
Before in November 2002, bought it bone stock.

Now, as the car sits today. Swapped to black interior with base seats, stock wheels, suspension, hood, front lip and smoked markers. Single turbo with supporting mods, just sold the fmic and am waiting on fdnewbie's vmount kit and all the other little problems worked out.

^^^ nice FD!!! Love your positioning of the PFC commander! Hehe.

The dream...
I don't really have any pictures of my car yet. I have a story that may enlighten you until I can further produce photography.
I owned a 87 GXL FC and was inquiring about a 13b-rew motor for my car because the stock engine just wasn't holding. He had told me a really good price on a reman he had sitting in a shop ($1500 complete) and he told me to come to his house and see if I'd rather have this other engine. We begin talking about the cars and he walks me behind his barn and shows me a car halfway covered with a car cover that looks like it has been forgotten and left to rot. The car happens to be a dream car of mine, the 93 Touring FD in Montego Blue. It is an automatic but it can always be swapped (in progress). It has no CD player, ripped tan leather seats, ruined interior tan panels, broken driver's side door handle, stained carpets, faded steering wheel. The exterior has a dent scratch on the passenger side rear quarter that goes from the door to the rear bumper, the front bumper and hood have a mark from a tow truck hook driving across the front end, the driver's side door is dented beyond repair, and NOTHING WORKS. We open the hood up and it looks like the engine has caught fire and is completely ruined it is so dirty(and somewhat melted from previous engine). So we begin talking about the car just for kicks and he tells me that the car has no starter, needs coils, and has been sitting for about 2 years. He tells me he doesn't even know if the engine runs because he bought the car to put a 3 rotor in and has since acquired too many cars to worry about this one(must be nice). I asked him what he would want for the car since it is sitting mud left to rust away and is horribly dirty(something I can't stand to see). He tells me he'll take what he's got in it ($6000). So we strike a deal. So the healing begins. We tow the car out of the mud with a tractor and I start wrenching. First things first, put a starter on her, but where is the starter? I search for about two hours before I find it hiding in his barn without any bolts or anything. I manage to find something that will hold the starter on there for the time being until I can find the proper size bolts. I spend about 5 hours putting the starter on and hooking random other hoses and wires back up under the car in the dirt. I then had to take a break since it was getting dark. I got up early the next day and head to work on the car. I find a new coil pack in his garage and take it out to the car and start wrenching the UIM off. I find several disconnected hoses and wires. I get the UIM off after a mind boggling 2 hours (much faster now) and put the coils on. I get the UIM back on and check all the fluids. Looks like the coolant is non-existant, the oil is from ancient Rome, and the belts are destroyed (one is actually three different bands that came apart). I head to AutoZone and find out that they carry NOTHING for my car. I manage to find a belt that works and grab some coolant and oil/filter. I change the fluids out and pop the belts on. I jump in like a kid who just got that just got the newest gaming system and a bike for Christmas. I twist the key like a madman would and NOTHING. The battery is dead, go figure right? I should have checked it, so I grab the charger and hope that the damn battery will hold a charge. I start cranking a few hours later and she fires right up and dies immediately. I crank it again and she fires up and runs for a second and dies again. So I realize I should have changed the plugs and pop in a fresh set of Iridiums to test her out. She fires right up like a champion and smokes like shes been in prison for 15 years. I damn near break into tears hearing the exhaust purr and the engine run so smoothly after not even being cranked for two years. I let her run for about 30 minutes and check every fluid and hose for leaks. I check the gauges, I charge the battery, I run around like a madman would who has just awoken Frankenstein. SHES ALIVE!! I decide that she needs to be driven on the road, seeing as I bought a car and didn't know anything about it. I pull her around slowly and finally get her out of the damn yard 10 minutes later and hit the street. I give her a little gas and she backfires and damn near dies. I think to myself, WTF shes running so smooth and this? I spent THREE MONTHS replacing vacuum lines, hoses, wires, fuses, filters, EVERYTHING under the engine bay that may have caused this problem. I finally stumbled upon a relay and found that my fuel pump relay (speed) was not even hooked up, but by this time I have no reason to believe this would fix it. Out of curiosity I take her out for a spin and push the gas down to expect a backfire at 7psi and nothing. She climbs up to 10 psi @ 2400 rpms like a goddess. I thought my gauge was broken so I STOMPED it. She downshifted into first right at the powerband and both tires broke loose. I held on like I was being baptisted. This just happened to be next to a elementary baseball field full of kids. She screamed by full boost and had me in love. Fast forward to now: I've been working on her everyday 2-8 hours a day. I've cleaned the paint to her utmost ability. I've replaced the intake system, the intercooler, the pipes, the battery, the vacuum lines (twice), the FF, the coolant lines, the driver side door handle, the drivers side window switches, the CD player, the front door panel speakers, added boost and water temp gauges, installed a complete Bilstein coilover system, added a Greddy Profec B II to limit boost spikes (first to buy to LOWER boost), and so many other things slowly replaced. I am currently working on swapping in a 5spd and adding on a new set of twins or converting to a single A-spec 35r kit. I am going to remove the air pump, the high-flow cat, the rats nest, upgrade the fuel system, add a PFC etc etc. I feel that I am part of the car with all of the time I have put into her. I have always loved RX-7's but since I've owned this car, there is no doubt in my mind that I will always have a RX-7 in the driveway. (Sorry if it's a bit chopped, it's late and I've been up for sometime.) |

Nice save man. :icon_tup: I had an 83 280zx turbo that I found under similar circumstances, and I spent 8 months putting it back together. Thats also how I aquired my current project, a 1956 f100 w/ a bb 460. It was just rotting away in my stepfathers garage, and I figured it would be perfect for towing home my next project. (funny how my brain works. I bought a project truck to rebuild so that I can eventually tow home another project car.... ) There is nothing like taking a car/truck that was abused and thrown away, and bringing it back from the dead! |
