How can I tell a real 93 R1??
Hello, I am looking for a 93 R1, and have run into many people who claim that their RX-7 is an R1. From what I have read, real R1's are rare. How can I be sure that it is a real one? I heard that real R1's didn't have leather seats...is that true? Is there a way to tell by the VIN#? Also, 93 was the only year for the R1 right? Thanks for your help!

You can tell if they have a 2nd oil cooler and suede seats. Most people won't install a second oil cooler cause it's expensive and a bitch. R1s don't have Cruise control, sunroofs, and rear windshield wipers.

R1's were only available in 93... the big bright red strut bar with rx7 on it is a good giveaway. (I've seen bright blue as well) R1's also have a front lip with brake ducting

Bigger and better things
Put your hand in the second opening ... The one on the pass side of the nose...If you feel a radiator like thing.. Its an r1/2
Also look for these things:
Smaller diameter steering wheel(yes..ive seen this tested b4)
No cruise control
No rear wiper arm
Suade Seats
The strut tower brance in the front
Bigger antisway bars under the car
Thats about it....

R1/R2
The R1/R2 seats are made of unique cloth interior and came only in black. Mazda did not use suede leather because cow skins weighs more than the cloth!
NO halgen fog lamps either.
There are subtle differences between R1s (93 only) and R2s (94/95). The rear sway bar diameter is larger in the R1 than in the R2. The shocks are stiffer in the R1 vs the R2.
93 R1s came in Red, Yellow, and Black only.
Front air damn and rear spoiler was standard on the R models.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but for 93s, if you look at the tach, there are line markings for about every 100 RPMs, while the other years, it's at every 500 RPMs or so. Unless the extra lines exist in 94s as well. I've pretty much only have gotten close looks at 93s and 95s. Oh, interior dash panels on 94+ models are a bit textured as opposed to smooth in the 93. And to my knowledge if it's yellow, it's an R1 (unless it's an aftermarket color).

If you do up a base model right, it would be very hard to tell from a real R1 without doing a VIN check. But then, unless you're in it for the collector's value, it wouldn't be effectively any different anyway. I think the easiest giveaway is the rear wiper, since no one goes through the trouble to eliminate it, but there are seat swaps, and spoiler, oil cooler, and brace addons. Of course, base models don't have the wiper.
