Highway patrol likes FDs

Last Tuesday I had the misfortune to go by a NC Highway Patrol car on radar stakeout while I was doing about 75mph in a 55 zone. As I was sitting in the patrol car getting the citation written up, the trooper kept going on and on about how nice the FD was and kept asking all kinds of questions about how fast, how well it handled, etc. You would think that as much as he seemed to admire the car that he would have given me only a warning. Other than reducing the speed he wrote on the citation to 70 mph, it was pay the judge time. Guess I should have offered to let him drive the car.

I'll let you drive mine if I can drive yours

You should've said that. You would think if he liked the car he would let you off, guess not.

Been there!

In fact, I was stopped in my 240SX once, the cop literally said "I wanted to see who drives this car".
I was nice to him 'cause he had the LS1 camaro... that's a fast car..

This is absolutely true. I've had it happen a number of times, and the bad thing is that i've never gotten a warning.

5 of us (all FD's) were out a few weeks ago tearing up the streets. Two of us were winding down after a race and got clocked @ 96 in a 65. The other three were clocked @ 84 or something while they were catching back up to us.

I got tagged via laser from behind after passing the cop sitting in the media with all his lights off. Once my V1 went off, I punched it seeing as there were 4 others behind me to take the ticket...(what a good friend I am, eh?)

So I fly to the next exit and tear off into some subdivision I knew pretty well to hide. The cop pulls over one of the other FD's (he picks the red one of course). Asked him what we were doing, and said he didn't pull over too many guys hauling *** like we were his age (red FD driver was 37). (All 5 of us are over 30)

anyways, The red FD driver told him we had a shop and work on these cars and that we were out tuning. Cop stepped back, looked as his car and said, ya, it looks like you've modified this one a bit! Cop told him to keep the speeds down and take it to the track if we need to tune driving that fast... Then let him go!

Lucky asses. I was out driving with a friend one day, he had his FD out and was following me. We came off a light, him behind me, and I took off. I had been playing on the Power FC all that day because it was in the middle of winter and somehow it was a warm enough day to get the 7 out. So I take off in 1st, 2nd... my friend was still behind me so I was like ok... 3rd, around the top of 3rd about a mile back I see cop lights. I am thinking RUN but right up the road there was a huge, busy intersection we would get caught in. Also my friend didn't know those roads so he would have been screwed.

We both pull over and the cop comes up to us with this huge attitude. I tell him I am sorry it was a nice enough day to take my car out and I had to tune it a bit. He bitches about taking it to a track and tuning it. Next he starts claming "you two were racing" (my friend was following me, not beside me) and that he can impound our cars. After a lot of verbal abuse he gives us a ticket for 64 in a 45... he didn’t get it on radar, if he did I know it would have been higher. The guy was a complete *** when I couldn't have been any nicer towards him. After he gave us the ticket he said "I dare you guys to fight this in court, I will tell the judge you two were racing and he will give you a higher penalty"

nocab72- I should be so lucky! I worked with and was trained by a bunch of PA state cops doing ski patrol work in PA, so I knew what to do during the traffic stop- pull over promptly in safe area, dome light on at night, hands in plain view, politely comply with officer's requests, etc. Even though I did all this and even though the NC trooper kept asking all kinds of tech type questions and how the FD compared to the NC Highway Patrol Camaros, he still gave me a $115 ticket. I even showed a lot of interest in his computer setup in his car and asked some knowledgeable questions about his evidence and communication procedures which allowed me to explain that I used to work with the state cops in PA. Problem is it will cost me about $1000 to have my lawyer try to make it go away or get it reduced to something else. That's the price of my new suspension upgrade. Rats. BTW- I'm no young kid either- 56 yrs.

*OUCH* -- There are sooo many kids with riced out cars in this town... cops pull them over for the stupidest things, no front plate, tinted windows, snake eyes illegal colors, neon's, etc (well they SHOULD be pulled over for their bad taste, but that's beside the point) even though there is no moving violation.

On the flip side I keep hearing more and more stories of older guys 30, 40, 50+ getting pulled over for what should have been written as wreckless operation, excessive speeding, excessive display of acceleration, etc and get off with warnings and jokes about taking it to the track, then lots of small talk about car mod'ing, etc. One of the few reasons I'm glad I'm getting older and loosing my hair...hahaha

I got pulled over for 60 in a 40 and street racing and the cop let me off. He also said "if you can't drive safely in a fast car, sell the fast car"

Same exact thing happened to me as I was driving home from Arkansas (where I bought the car). Cop was cool, asked alot of questions, but gave me a ticket anyway... and I was just trying to keep up with my wife driving a rental Ford Focus (I was trying to keep a low profile since my car is red).

I once got stopped for 68 in a 45. Got dropped to an unsafe lane change. I love Lakewood, they just want your money. The don't care about the charges if you've got a decent record.

I got written up a little while ago too. Got caught for 74 in a 45. Cop said something to the effect of "gorgeous car man, my brother used to own a black 3rd gen." Then he wrote my ticket up and basically said "I know how quick these things can be, and I know how tough it is to stay off the throttle. But seriously, try to slow it down a little."

as he started to walk away he said something to the effect of, "oh by the way, I'm on vacation during your court date"

needless to say, I beat the ticket in court cause he didn't show. I thought that was pretty cool of him

Reckless acceleration? Ouch.......... Maybe you should send him a couple of r/t tickets to Aruba that week - might be cheaper than the ticket!

Same thing happened to me. I was driving pretty quick alongside my friends car(01 GTi with a little work) because i thout he wanted to go and he was tryin tell me something. Well anyways, we get pulled over, asks me what i was doing and I told him speedign. He said
" You were also racing". I told him "Do you think that thing has a chance against me" joking around. He laughed and told me to keep it on the track. He gave me a ticket for 65 in a 40 because he said he had to do 70 to catch up. There was no radar ID number and if there was, it woulda been alot higher than 65. He said that i didnt have a chance in court, so i broight it to a lawyer anyway and only had to pay $150 and 4 hours school...Icing on the cake, I saw a yellow 360 modena pulled over by a motorcycle cop that wanted to have his picture taken inside it...

Funny my cousin got pulled over for doing a "u-turn," but got ticketed for not having a trash can in his car. This was in Seattle.

Wife got a ticket in our '94 for 69 in a 65 on the I-405. The cop said, "There was only one car going faster than you and you passed him." I'm still trying to figure that one out. Plus picking out a car only 4 mph over the limit? (Wife said her speedomter read 70 mph.)
