HIGH REVVING at start up... normal? is mine a bit extreme?

My 93 RX-7 AUTO. when i start it up after a night
of garaged rest () it revvs very high - up to 3000 RPM for at least 15 seconds... then idels down to 1800 or so, then slowly drops to normal.

i have heard this is normal... but sometimes it does it up to 2300 or 2400 RPM which seems more like it.

Does EVERYONE's do this?
is mine a bit extreme? (too high)?

Any input is helpful!

When I start up, the engine speed shoots for 3000. I HATE doing that to a completely cold engine. I tap the throttle JUST A LITTLE BIT (not enough to cause the engine speed to increase) and the idle drops to the 1800 or so. I let it warm at that rpm. The 3K is an emissions thing to immediatley warm the pre-cat and run at hight rpm where unburned HC's are less. I've also read that starting in first gear (but with the cluch in!! hee) will reduce the 3K to the level you are looking for. So it's normal, and defeatable

Good advice but he has an auto. You can disable the AWS. Look on Steve Cirians site I think there is a how-to there.

Just tap the gas, people should be shot revving it to 3k rpm's on a completly cold engine. It was only for emmisions and does horrible damage to an engine. BOO EMMISIONS, BOO THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn, do people here not even have owner's manuals? There's a section in the owner's manual about the 3k rev at startup, not to mention write-ups on Rob Robinette's and Steve Cirian's sites. Sorry to be harsh but this is basic FD-ownership stuff here.....

Just start your car in gear. No biggie but don't forget you're in gear and let off the clutch .

Hehehe....ahhhhh. Well spend the 3-5k to convert it to manual and then start the car in gear. That should fix it .

Remove the AWS and save the cold start no oil damage . That system is so bad on your engine.

ok guys... mine used to do that.. and i know that it's normal... but about 2 weeks ago my engine light came on. i found out it was the egr valve, which is a emission problem. now when i start the car, it doesn;'t jump up to 3k no more, is this because of the egr valve???

Is there honestly a problem with tapping the throttle ever so slightly before it gets to 3k? It takes a second to rise, and when I dont start my car in gear I am always able to tap it before it goes anywhere near 3k. As long as you hit that throttle right when the engine turns over your in good shape... not worth a bunch of work to remove it IMO...

heh, i second the notion that ppl who didn't even bother researching 7's enough before they buy them to find out about AWS is, should be shot....

After I put in my Power FC my revs are quite a bit higher at startup than before.
