HIGH REVVING at start up... normal? is mine a bit extreme?
My 93 RX-7 AUTO. when i start it up after a night
of garaged rest () it revvs very high - up to 3000 RPM for at least 15 seconds... then idels down to 1800 or so, then slowly drops to normal.
i have heard this is normal... but sometimes it does it up to 2300 or 2400 RPM which seems more like it.
Does EVERYONE's do this?
is mine a bit extreme? (too high)?
Any input is helpful!

When I start up, the engine speed shoots for 3000. I HATE doing that to a completely cold engine. I tap the throttle JUST A LITTLE BIT (not enough to cause the engine speed to increase) and the idle drops to the 1800 or so. I let it warm at that rpm. The 3K is an emissions thing to immediatley warm the pre-cat and run at hight rpm where unburned HC's are less. I've also read that starting in first gear (but with the cluch in!! hee) will reduce the 3K to the level you are looking for. So it's normal, and defeatable

Damn, do people here not even have owner's manuals? There's a section in the owner's manual about the 3k rev at startup, not to mention write-ups on Rob Robinette's and Steve Cirian's sites. Sorry to be harsh but this is basic FD-ownership stuff here.....

ok guys... mine used to do that.. and i know that it's normal... but about 2 weeks ago my engine light came on. i found out it was the egr valve, which is a emission problem. now when i start the car, it doesn;'t jump up to 3k no more, is this because of the egr valve???

Is there honestly a problem with tapping the throttle ever so slightly before it gets to 3k? It takes a second to rise, and when I dont start my car in gear I am always able to tap it before it goes anywhere near 3k. As long as you hit that throttle right when the engine turns over your in good shape... not worth a bunch of work to remove it IMO...

yea i have that same problem every now and then.. i dont call it a problem either... i just turn the key back..( like turning off the car.. but not all the way..) and i turn it back .. disables the AWS asap
