350 maybe NA, more would require turbo charging. Also remember it has to feel refined which it's all that easy with 400+ Hp rotaries. This would require a modern VVT turbo charging system that could easily be 20k or more plus a 3 rotor motor would price the car around $50,000 for the base. No fuel economy and tough competition would make for a sale disaster.
I like to see a new RX-7 but would be hard to pull off with Ford, its parent company having money troubles of their own and an ego.

When the first gen's came out, they referred to the 7 as the "Poor Man's Corvette". It was cheap and very fun to drive. 2nd gen gained some weight and IMO was modeled after the 944. The FD was a beautiful production super-car....with a price tag to match.
Why not go back to the original idea of a lightweight, two-seater, with good power?
I say N/A two rotor with great styling (not like the RX8) and sell an upgrade package (R???) with a single turbo. Similar to the second gen with the TII. Keep the price under $30K and let the enthusiasts upgrade from there. The fact of the matter is if you build a three rotor, or a 500hp production car the price tag would be waaayyyy too much for the majority of people to afford. Lightweight and ridiculous handling have always been the mainstay of the RX7. I say keep it that way.

Wow. I think Mazda will see that and cease all discussion about even the possibility of making a new 7.

I think times have changed. Mazda already sells a good-handling, low powered cheap car. It's called a Miata.
Today, if they're going to bother to make it, it needs to keep up with it's competition. Corvettes, Mustangs, 350Z's, Skylines, EVO's, STi's, etc.
In case nobody's noticed, there's a horsepower war on, and today's buyer want's a car with numbers he can brag about on internet forums. "fun to drive" and "peppy" don't cut it anymore.
They can give it a N/A 2-rotor with 240 hp, but it's needs to weigh no more than 2,200 lbs.... preferably more like 2,000 so that it's near the Elise.

It's a good feeling driving down the street and watching fingers point and heads turn. I feel that FD owners are special breed of people to want to own, obtain and build and showoff these beautiful cars for all the hard work, money & love it took to get. So having the 7 available to the public would make all of us kill fight. I think you all know where i'm comming from. Peeeez

But there's still gotta be a better way than going 3-rotor...or beefing up to 500hp. The Corvette's a pig. It has huge hp numbers but how much does it weigh? Over 3200 lbs. isn't it? Same with the Mustang. The 350 is a little lighter but only puts out 280hp, right? Maybe 300 with the Track Pack.
Get the weight/power ratio down around the FD mark. 255hp stock with a car that only weighs 2800lbs is a fantastic ratio. Why not move on up into the JDM spec. FD's hp ratings and take it one step further. I say shoot for 300hp, keep the weight to around the 27-2800 mark, and find a reliable single (quick spooling) turbo. Do some upgrades for the "race" packages....dual oil coolers, Brembo brakes, hp gain over 310, etc. If you price this thing outside of the $40K realm...you won't sell many.

he got
i agree with you just because Toyota is the no 1 seller in the US does not mean that everybody needs to listen to them, same thing that a lot of people drive Honda does not mean they need to be a fanatic and buy everything honda. In automotive industry is all about innovation, HDP, you as a staff that works for Toyota should know this better than any1 else.

At 3150, the C6 Z06 is hardly a "pig".... mustangs and vipers and such are on up to 3600-3800. It's also a national champion autocrosser (C5 Z06), so....
I don't think Mazda needs to build a 500 hp car. I DO think it needs a a power to weight ratio that's in line w/ modern competitors, so if they aren't going to put in the engineering and technology in horsepower, they need to put it in to weight savings.
Conservative guesstimates:
1993 RX7, 255 hp, 2750 lbs = 10.8 lbs/hp
2006 C6: 400 hp, 3250 lbs = 8.1 lbs/hp.
2006 C6 Z06, 500 hp, 3150 lbs = 6.3 lbs hp
My 1993 RX7 2700 lbs, 430 hp (FW) = 6.3 lbs/hp (and there's no way i'm beating a C6 Z06, even WITH an equal pwr/wght)
SO, a couple theoretical RX7's:
w/ 240 hp "RX8 motor", it would need a 2,000 lb curb weight to even get near the C6 at 8.3 lbs/hp. Good luck with THAT.
w/ a 2,400 lb. car (Still a stretch, but doable), it would need about 300 hp to equal a C6, and 380 hp to be in the same league as a C6 Z06. 380 hp means an N/A 3-rotor, or forced induction 2-rotor. 300 hp would probably be the outer limit of a N/A 2-rotor. Maybe only 280.
