Help! - Oil gauge suddenly reads ZERO...

Was just out driving........kinda hard......... all of a sudden my car lost lots of power and I noticed the oil gauge dropped practically to 0..........the car didn't die but seems to only have about 2/3 power...........even when you bling, bling the engine the oil pressure only jumps up a little............no where near 60 or so like usual..........does it sound like a vacuum hose that blew off? and would this cause the oil gauge to drop?........... I also sorta noticed a little air type whistling sound when I hit the throttle as well after this happened...........but EVERYTHING sounds a little different since I just put the DP on today .........

I have no boost gauge or anything beyond stock gauges to check...........

Whaddya think?........ what should I look for tomorrow AM when it's light out?

THanks as always.........

Get a boost gauge, and stop using "bling bling" like that.

You may have hit fuel cut, and never noticed that oil pressure guge sucks *** until then.

First, until you learn the proper use of bling bling.... don't.

Secondly, periods are not a way to substitute real punctuation.

Third, the stock oil sensor has a tendency to get gunked up and read oddly. In and of itself, it's nothing to worry about. You can just take it out and clean it.

Fourth, the whistling sound is probably just the turbos that you can now hear since the addition of the dp.

Finally, the loss of power is a little disconcerting. Take the car for another spin and see if it still feels the same. If the problem persists, check the dp first. Make sure everything is nice and snug and there is no exhaust leak. If none, check for a vacuum hose that came off.

Oh, and get a boost gauge.

Did you do the DP job from just underneath the car or do it from above and below? If you did it from above and things are still not right then you gotta check all the hoses you came in contact with.

The loss of power is strange. My oil pressure gauge hasn't been working for a while now - it's ok when driving but at idle it reads 0 then it'll pop back up to 30 then back down to 0 - it sucks - but there's plenty of oil being circulated (oil porting and eccentric shaft plug mod) either exhaust or boost leak.

Guys...I don't think the DP is installed yet. His sig says "Pettit downpipe on the way."

Nevermind, just re-read the thread
Update your sig man!!!

Boy o' boy. Just looking for help and get busted *****. SpooledUp7 and Lost Time; sorry I got your panties twisted and bunched up. Please o please instruct me as to the proper used of bling bling; silly me I just thought it was referring to revving or accelerating the engine.

Decay and others, sorry about the non-updated sig. Just did the DP yesterday, and had forgotten to update it before this post. I'm thinking a line must have popped off, which would cause the whistling; I sure didn't hear it before all three symptoms seemed to occur simultaneously: 1. Engine loses about a third power, so I immediately went to the gauges to check for overheat, etc. 2. Notice the oil pressure gone. 3. Notice the whistling. Definitely didn't sound like turbo spool up to me.

Was just wondering if certain hoses affect the oil gauge dramatically or what and would be simulataneous with the 1/3 power loss.

Thanks again. There now; any flames?

Also:

Also; it definitely wasn't fuel cut. Am familiar with that. Also it wasn't "not noticing" the fuel guage sucking until whenever. When parked the gauge will blip up towards 60 when revving it; now it's pretty much dead and barely will get off zero. Also; did the DP from the bottom and also replace both belts. Most likely is a hose I came in contact with.

Was really concerned that something major was going on that you guys would diagnose based on the symptoms.

There are no vacuum lines that affect the oil pressure sensor. It is probably just fouled from use. Remove it from your oil pan, after draining oil first, and clean it. This should rememdy that problem. As far as the lost power, you need to look for an exhaust leak, which this sounds like. When you put the 3-piece gasket back in, was it in good shape? Check where the downpipe attaches to the turbo manifold. This is most likely where there is a problem.

I thought the oil pressure sending unit was just below the oil filter? Anyway, reading 0 happens if you have a bad connection, gunked-up, or just goes bad (this is one of those parts which fails on most FD's). In my case I put in a new sending unit and it reads fine now. Never seen this related to the oil pressure unless you don't have enough oil. I've seen the car idle funny if you let the oil level drop down to the bottom of the stick.

You are talking about the oil LEVEL sensor. The oil pressure sensor is located just below the oil filter mount on the driver's side. Pull it out and clean it with some sand paper or something. It should work now, if not, then the sender itself is bad (this is common) and needs to be replaced. I think the part is $80 or so.

If your loosing power and have a rush of air sound when the turbos would normally be kicking in check all you IC pipes and also the vacume line that goes to the blow off valve. You should have removed it during the dp install. If it is off the bov would be open venting your boost out. Id suspect the bov line, it attaches to a nipple on top of the bov which is black and right in there with your intake piped above the dp.

The post about cleaning off the oil pressure sensor is correct. Its under the filter and they do get guncked up over time so it might need cleaning. You might also check your oil if you already have not.

Good Luck,
STEPHEN

Thanks to all for the input. Will check it all out. Also still standing by for correct "bling bling" context.

you might try using an auxillary oil guage and if that reads 0 your oil pump is bad and replace it. I just resently had to replace the oil oump on my 93 when my gauge went to 0.

Thanks again everyone. The bottom line is that the gauge is working on and off, so it (sensor, sending unit, etc.) either needs to be cleaned or replaced. Checked all hoses and everything else I could see; all seems well. Power seems to be back at 100%.

I remember when I did my mods that the car ran funny for a bit right after...someone had suggested resetting the ecu. I did that and it seemed to help...probably a placebo effect. Anyway glad things are going better.
