Help!!!.. My exhaust is too loud..

I recently put on a midpipe.. and now, my car is too loud and gets too much attention.. I'm afraid that cops will hear it and come after me.. At my age, thats last thing I want..

I would hate to get a different type of midpipe.. what would you guys think about wrapping it with heat wrap? Would this help the sound??? I would think it will help a little.. Since its all steel from Down to cat (N1 Dual). its like hitting a bare metal.. i would think that wrap will act like dampener... I was going to do the wrap thing anyhow to contain the heat..

Please post your thoughts or experience with this.. as all this is just speculation in my part..

thank you!

PHIL

Might help some, but for real change you will likely need to either:

1. Switch to a quieter carback, like an RB dual.

2. Have a muffler welded into your existing MP (i forget what type everyone uses)

3. Buy a resonated MP.

4. 1. and either 2 or 3.

Description of the wrap..

"High-Temperature Pipe and Tube Wrap

?_Temperature Range: -50° to +2300° F
?_Heat Flow Rate: 0.25 Btu/hr. x in./sq. ft. @ 75° F

_____This durable wrap not only withstands extreme heat, it also has excellent sound absorption and resists tears. Made of white alumina-silica based ceramic fibers with an aluminum jacket, it's unaffected by hydrocarbons and water and resists most chemicals. Use this UV-resistant material indoors and out. Install with banding (see 7760K on this page). "

Might want to try a resonated midpipe, tho I doubt you want to since you just bought a midpipe and that's what made yours louder

Just figured I'd throw that out there.

or you could put the silencers in. Do you have them?
I had silencers made for my n1 and it quiets it down tremendously but also makes the car much slower when they are in.

Haha, you havean N1 dual and dont want to attract attention to yourself with the sound? If you want to be quiet sell that and get a RB dual tip. You will probably lose 1-2 HP but the sound will be much much less attention grabbing. Wrapping the mid pipe wont help, a resonated mid-pipe will help just a little, an in-line muffler would be the best bet if you dont want to get rid of the N1.

Weld in a Borla XR-1 Sportsman silencer/muffler.

16 inch, oval, 3 inch inlet/outlet.

Available from Summit Racing.

Works great.

Cuts down drone when cruising, idle is loud, but not stupid loud.

WOT is still very very loud.

Mine was welded in at about a 15 degree angle to allow proper clearance. Depending on your MP you might be able to get it welded in flat, but that is a moot point.

Just make sure it doesn't hit anything underneath the car/chassis/frame/tunnel etc etc.

Please let us know, as I will be running that setup as well.

To the person with the sound problem, try the RB dual tip- the amount of power you will loose, won't be much...just ask Vosko...

how much louder can puting a midpipe on there over a stock cat. I have an appointment with KDR to install a midpipe and do some Dyno tuning. you guys are starting to scare me. Can you guys give me an estimated decipuls increase?

If you dont want to get a resonated midpipe, try the carchemistry inserts. They worked pretty well on a project I had, we used a decibel meter from radio shack and it lowered it by 5 or 6 dBs, from what I remember. It was on a ae86.

If you want one I have one in the garage somewhere, sell it for cheap. Was going to use on my car, but I dont think there is a need to anymore.

It's "decibels".

From my experience with friend's FDs, a midpipe is atleast 6-8 dB louder at idle with the same cat-back. At WOT, it is at least 10 dB louder (subjectively, twice as loud or more).

how does RB dual compare to pfs? My pfs is pretty loud with the high flow cat + I'm not a big fan of the way the tip looks.

PFS is louder than RB. A local guy had a PFS w/ highflow and Apex Single-T... commanded too much attention from the cops. He switched to a RB dual... its not as loud anymore.

A good friend "SPOautos" have resonated Mid and RB dual.. maybe its pettit.. I don't know.. but its not that loud at all..
Man, I didn't know mid pipe will make it this loud.. I might just go head and get some N1 silencers.. and use it during just in town driving....

I've also talked to the ATL distributor of the wrap and they told me it will reduce the sound some.. but not back to where it was.. So, I'm going to order 36ft of this wrap and wrap it.. Its going to be about 80.00 job.. but at least I will contain the heat..

Oh.. I guess I could sell the MP and get the resonated one.. but do they really cut down the noise to a noticable level?? I think my catback isn't the ideal.. but I like the look of it.. and with my stock cat.. it sounded great... but just too loud now....

I have a pettit resonated midpipe which uses a Magnaflow oval muffler, and an Apex GT Spec exhaust, its loud enough that my neighbore cusses at me when I warm my car up, and if i cruise at over 2900rpm on the freeway you can't hear someone talking very well, and its almost ridiculously loud when you get on it, so I don't know what to say...

I have a similiar setup and it's obnoxiously loud on the road. I just ordered the silencer for the Apex catback a few days ago.

Sounds like a waste of $80. The mid pipe isn't located in the engine compartment, so you aren't reducing engine heat. The wrap will go around the outside of the mid pipe, so it will have ZERO effect on the noise level out the back. In addition, if you decide to weld in a resonator later, you will just have to remove it. I don't know if it is the type you can reinstall.

I suggest you spend the money to have a muffler welded into the midpipe. The wrap is useless.

Well, i was going to wrap down, mid and part of catback..

Do you think its better for me to not wrap it and go with N1 silencer?? or just sell the damn thing and go with Pettit resonated??
