Yes, you will need a counterweight. A counterweight is built into the stock flywheel. Aftermarket flywheels don't have them built in. It easily attaches when you put things back together.

I assume that you currently have a stock flywheel, and will be replacing it with a light flywheel (not really "replacing a light flywheel").

You need to buy a counterweight. You get it from Mazda (or someone that sells Mazda parts), as it is a stock Mazda part. To order, all you need to know is the year of your car (and really, the same counterweight works for all RX-7s from 91 on).

It keeps the engine balanced. The flywheel needs to be imbalanced, since the engine is imbalanced without it. Together, the imbalanced engine + imbalanced flywheel result in a balanced pair. The stock flywheel has the required imbalance built-in. Light flywheels do not, so you bolt them to a counterweight.

Whoa now. Are there lightweight flywheels for sale that dont come with the counterweight already? When I bought my racingbeat flywheel it came with the counterweight that just bolted on. Im pretty sure my friends ACT came the same way. Even had instructions with torque specs.

Sure you can buy just the flywheel by itself. You would have to buy the counterweight seperately or just buy a "kit" from some place that has collected the necessary parts for you.

Racing Beat includes the counterweight with their flywheels (and also includes them in the quoted weight). Most other vendors do not include the counterweight (in the flywheel price, or in the quoted weight). Most vendors do sell the counterweights to go with the flywheels, sometimes in packages with the flywheels. ACT sells their flywheels and counterweights separately.

Okay, I'm out of the loop. What does DAPDAS mean? And please don't answer this question with "DAPDAS", haha (I did a search!).

Here are some pics of the RB aluminum flywheel, and the stock Mazda counterweight that came with it (the same stock Mazda part is used with all aftermarket flywheels):

Pretty much all aftermarket flywheels for the RX-7 come with the counterweight. Buying one used, you're on your own, but new they do. It'll be REAL obvious if you try and attach it without the counterweight - it ain't goin' on there.
