Hatch Carpet Gap Driving Me Crazy

Unfortunately there are not many FDs where I live and simply looking at others is just not that easy for me, so here I am. This is a very small issue however it has been driving me crazy for a few years now. I’m 99 percent sure everything is put together correctly/ fully seated as far as rear hatch plastics go, and that the hatch carpet is factory. It’s a stock non bose car.

I can easily see in between down to the spare tire cover (no spare tire in car, of which I just now realized may be something). It’s like the carpet it too short to actually reach the back and the little 90* lip on the plastic is too high. Idk but the carpet sags down and exposes the gray cover, looking like garbage.

Is there something missing or am I crazy?

You might be able to build up the backing of the end piece to bring it closer to the carpet. Mindyou, each time you remove the end piece you risk breaking a tab. Good news you can get new end pieces for about $200 from Mazda.

Also you can get an second overlay carpet, that are OEM correct as they were a shop option. OEM OEM are expensive but there are a number of replicas available, that you can even order with the "RX7" stitched logo.

I got mine from Gira777 on ebay.

Carpet is bumpy due to having the luggage strap usually hooked up.

Seller on YAJ represented that the below was an original Spirit R carpet. If so it should normally have got bid much higher. We had to look very closely at the underside of the logo stitching to compare to the genuine article. Conclusion was, it was hard to tell.

I think your fitment is normal OP….at least compared to mine (R model so no BOSE). And I’ve never had a reason to remove and reinstall. It also bugged me too, so some years ago I bought an over-lay carpet mat from Garage Alpha. I think I read somewhere here they struggling after the Covid years and their site has them listed with a 4-6 week delivery as they’re made to order…with border and color choices. But I’ll attest to the excellent quality and fitment of the mat. I’ve also bought other stuff from them (including matching floor mats) and always been happy.

Yeah I’ve always been happy with the GarageAlpha stuff. I never knew that was an overlay mat, I always just thought they were meant to swap with the OEM mat.

With the GarageAlpha mat laying overtop the stock, it reaches all the way to the back and covers up that gap?

There something of a support bracket that goes under that center panel and keep it kind of pushed out. Is yours present? Looks like that little gap would be covered if the panel was pushed out a little more

If there’s supposed to be a piece there then I know nothing about it and would love to get one.

There might have been a foam block that falls off over time.

Also I wonder if having the the rear washer bottle in place might hold the panel out more.

Is the carpet supposed to go over or under the lip of the rear panel?

Well I feel good knowing that then I guess. Mine is also a R1. Do you have the spare tire in the car?

File was made by a student friend of mine.

I have given him about 20 pieces to work on, but progress is slow.

Not sure if he would make the file public yet.

Can you have him prioritize the seatbelt shoulder strap holder clip? That would be sweet haha

That I could live with, but why are they so different? Is your carpet factory and what year/model is the car? What about the spare tire, factory size spare?

stock/oem carpet; 95 Pep, stock spare, no spare cover

probably different due to low quality control at the carpet supplier for Mazda

My back panel has these two brackets still intact, but I still have the same gap as the OP. I just chalked it up to the carpet possibly shrinking over time. Not sure if that's really a thing that happens.
