Has anybody driven around w/o the transmission tunnel heat shield?

I need a littlte bit more clearance under my car and was thinking of removing it, but I'm concerned about gearbox noise. Has anybody taken this shield off? I am referring to the one that wraps around the underside of the tunnel and has a soft core with a metal exterior plate. It's a couple feet long.

I'm missing it. It gets rather warm inside the car.

What do you need clearance in the tranny tunnel for? That heat shield being gone won't provide much more room and you'll hate driving the car for more than 10 minutes.

No, it's the gearbox. Because I moved it back into the narrower section of the tunnel there is not a lot of clearance above it. It does fit with the heat shield in place but there is next to no clearance. I might try using a thinner aftermarket heat shield.

stiff polyurethane trans mounts would minimize movement...

and just an idea: maybe you could find some way to shim/modify the mounting points to give you more clearance... of course that would have some effect on the front of the engine, but it would create much less movement up in front than the trans tail housing would go down in back because of the engine mount locations.

You don't need the heat shield if you wrap the downpipe, midpipe and exhaust pipes. I removed mine three years ago and run a single to4s turbo. All my pipes are heat wrapped - no heat problems inside.

+1. I kept the shield but have 4" pipe all the way back. I wrapped everything which made a BIG difference. Gotta be cooler on the transmission too.

What exhaust are you running?

Also, is there much gear noise without the heat shield?

I need to do that. It gets rather warm after about 20 mins of driving.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of heat wrap did u use?

I used an industrial, thick fiberglass wrap an gave my pipes a good wrap from the Single turbo outlet all the way back.

Look at one of my posts there a ways back to see it under the car. It works, and is NO louder than before.
