Smile Guidance to help tune my avc-r please.

Hi

I just installed my new Apexi AVC-R due to a horrid overboost. This is how it went down. After I installed my down pipe and intake my bone stock car it would start boosting a pattern of 10-12-10. It progressively got worse to a now 10-13-15. I said to hell with this. I bought an apexi AVC-R and installed it. But while I was in there when I pulled and plugged the nipples to the pre-control and wastegate actuators I noticed none of the lines had pills in them. I know it had a vacuum line job done in 2001 so who ever did it did a bone head job and did not replace or put the pills back in the lines.

Now on to my real question after abit of history.

I read on how to do a basic tune to the AVC-R from http://www.robrobinette.com/boost_avc_r_install.htm which was an excellent source of info to guide me installing the unit. Now I have my boost pattern under control some what to a 9-5-10. I basically in general want to know where to start tuning and where to look I know that I want a nice smooth 10-10-10 with no spike. But how do I go about accomplishing this with a stock car except for a down pipe and intake. I know nothing about tuning but I got it to a basic tune. I just need some guidance from people with experience on what to do next, where to look and fine tune.

I would appreciate all the help and any links to where I can get more in depth knowledge.

You may have later turbos, which have a restriction in the nipple at the turbo compressor instead of pills.

In any case, if you get too much boost above 4500, dial down the wastegate. If you get a spike in the middle, dial down the precontrol.

Red face

Oh my! I think I am not doing this right on the AVC-R. I raised the duty cycle to 50% and the boost to .70 and I get a pattern of 7-5-10 then it flutters between 9 and 11 above 5,000 rpms. never solid. what am I doing wrong?

Got it finally.... well almost

This is how it goes down.

The [A] Setting I set it for racing or for maximum power.

In order to get the boost to stay constant I had to set the boost at .65, next I set the duty cycle to 47%. Now here is the trick. You have to go to the "Start Duty" and set each parameter individually. I set
1st @ 48%
2nd@ 54%
3rd @ 47%
4th @ 5%
5th @ 0%

that gives me a close 10-9.5-10 boost pattern with a spike to 10.5..... reasonably close to my goal but not quite there.

I am still working out the spike issue. I want them to ultimately run like a non sequential system with just a 10 across the board. I am almost there. It feels real nice and linear not "boost....transition....get laid back a bit. It feels like you are just getting laid back but at every rpm increase by the 1,000 you feel it pull you a little more than before.

The [B] Setting I set it for cruising and city driving.

IE there is no fast action turbo spool-up.

I put the boost @ .25 and the duty cycle @ 20%. That nets a nice smooth 6-4.5-6. That is good for when boost is only necessary for highway cruising when you want to conserve fuel and let your turbos take a break. This is small boost for passing a car without the high boost unless necessary. (That is later on)

Good for city driving so you don't spool to fast and fly threw traffic.
This setting really slows the turbos spool up. So it feels like an N/A car.

The Extra's

I also have it scrambled to where if I'm in a tight spot and I really need to gun it to get out while in the conservative mode I hit my toggle switch and it switches to the [A] settings and lets me take off and then goes back to the conservative [B] mode.

So my [A] setting is for racing, or for power when needed to give that extra umffff. I set the [B] setting for cruising so fuel is not wasted and the car acts like it has some sense to it. Not hauling off like a mad man as in the [A] setting.

The End Bargain

Now the final task is to get the [A] mode to the 10-10-10 and the [B] mode to 5-5-5. I believe this can be accomplished with the "Start Duty" cycles. I just have to tweak them a bit more. I think the key is at the transition point I need to raise the solenoids duty cycle a bit more at say 4-5,000 RPM's. We will see!

I will keep you guys informed if not just for myself and others searching for the AVC-R on how to tune it for the stock sequential system.

Cheers for now.....
