J1169 and ISO5130 both apply in California as well.I've been reading about those two for a month now and the 95 decibel at a 45 degree angle rule applies to ANY internal combustion engine. The only difference would be a newer model car that cannot rev up to it's appropiate rpm due to limiter,in which there is a different testing method.Greddy never answered m emails so I did the best with what I had,and luckily for me,it worked......this time

bump, just got one of these last night. I'm from NJ as well. l want to go to court on the basis of principle alone. rather pay court costs for 30 than the 55 dollar ticket. very upset a ticket can be given based upon opinion. New Jersey Statutes - Title 39 Motor Vehicles and Traffic Regulation - 39:3-70 Mufflers. - New Jersey Attorney Resources - New Jersey Laws never even states any decibel limit like other states where i believe it's 95. Take into account there are semi trucks and numerous commercial vehicles that are just as loud if not louder as our fd's and you wonder how such tickets can be given. Every truck driver should get these weekly, the law clearly states ALL motor vehicles. Why are commercial vehicles exempt? Because they don't have wings or they aren't red. Profiling as far as I am concerned.

neutral when ever passing cops ! LOL , sorry man that does sound shady and for 54 dollars its hard to justify it
You could take it to the cop if you hire a lawyer it will be more then 50 , if you go there yourself . I dont know when your work schedual is , but I'd lose money going to court vs paying that ticket . you could risk going yourself , and the cop being a dick and showing up and then giving all kinds of explanations , and then chances are they will take the cops word over yours

Once got pulled over for no front plate by a biker mustache cop. Made me pop my hood because he "heard a woosh sound" lol. (Had a vmount, intakes, twinpower, no cats, rb duals, catch can) I thought i was screwed.
Out of everything i had done, he touches my silicone coupler for my i/c and asks if its "silicone?" Confused, i replied "um yes pretty sure" Cop joyfully jumps like a kid and says thats a ticket! Walks away and writes me up. I objected but he assured me that silicone is illegal and adds hp, messes with emissions. He apparently knew all about rx7's. Not quite the engineer he was. I got it dropped at court without any issues. There was no such rule against silicone in Ca.
Cops really do whatever they feel like sometimes.
Keep documentation about ur exhaust in the car so next time he show is to the cop when he complains about ur exhaust.

We have some damn loud exhausts in CO and we go by a lot of cops, they seem not to care much here. Thank god. I was behind a couple of us driving around town and one of us was spitting little fireballs out during some small acceleration during cruising....that didn't seem to matter much either.

Awesome bump! lol
I got pulled over a few years back, about 2 weeks after getting my 4" exhaust built. The cop was VERY perplexed and kept asking me if my exhaust was a factory option (I just replied that his question was an excellent one) and/or if I had a hole in it (to which I replied that I thought it may have a hole - not specifying that I was talking about the 4" wide one pointing at the ground).
He let me off with a warning to be sure I got it checked out after I told him that my car had just started making that much noise a few weeks earlier (not specifying that's when I installed the new exhaust) and that I had scheduled an appointment with a specialist regarding the new noise (I was getting it retuned, but I didn't tell him that).
I *really* toyed with the police officer during that stop, and I left him so confused and befuddled that he let me just drive off while he was still trying to figure out what had just happened

friendly tip 90% of the time a lawyer does nothing for you that you yourself, or the public prosecutor can't do for you. It's a scam when they send you those notices in the mail lol.
I'm doing it for principle more than anything else dude. Im butt hurt about this huge loop hole. Any law students want to chime in and respond to this? Did some research and the doctrine of vagueness applies to this i believe.
Void for Vagueness Doctrine legal definition of Void for Vagueness Doctrine
I'm no law student but that seems like a perfect match. F**k nj!!!!! :ANGER:

I hesitate to mention this but I was a Deputy Sheriff for over 15 years and in the Reserves even longer.
Here is what I suggest to fight the ticket. Set a court date and bring the spec sheet for your exhaust system from the greddy website as EVIDENCE that your vehicle is within your current state standard. I know that does not mean a lot to us car guys but shown to a judge he will be impressed that you bother to bring in actual evidence and let you go. If the officer still says it is too loud ask him to present HIS evidence to prove otherwise. Also bring a video of your headlights at night. Film so very stock looking cars next to it and show them side by side. Yeah... I know it's a pain in the ***.
Good luck.....
Oh... and I've never been forced to produce any quota before in any of the areas I served.
