GIZZmo Thermal intake manifold gasket
I was wondering if anybody tried using this product. Seemw pretty good. I wanted to buy the ebay uim and lim gasket but i cant find them. Reason why is that read a forum stating they were better than stock metal ones (rx7wishing).

this type of thing is really big for the honda camp.... alot of it has to do with heatsoak from the coolant flowing in the head/block transferring to the intake manifold and heating the incoming air.
apprently its worth 5hp AT THE MOST but a more accurate statement would be 1-3hp and the consistency was never tested.
not worth the $90 IMO
everything in the engine bay is going to get a certain amount of heatsoak EVEN PLASTIC.
i'd rather spend my money on a coating and making a heat shield from the turbos because thats where most of the heatsoak comes from, if it hasn't already been heated by the coolant in the throttle body if you haven't bypassed that already

Back from the dead!
I was wondering if anyone else has one of these too. I got one not for the heat transfer aspect but to use it as a spacer because my fuel rails were pressing against each other. With this gasket I had the room I needed to keep the rails from touching, but it's not sealing all the way around. I only noticed one area where it was leaking but there could be more. I have no idea why it's leaking because it's not broken or cracked and the stock gasket sealed just fine.
I've thought about coating each side with some high temp RTV but I'm not sure it would work. Could I possibly get a spacer made of aluminum or something to use as a gasket as well?

I had figured I would give them a shot, they did not last long at all. I developed a high idle and could smell fuel after boosting just after breaking in the engine. Narrowed it down to a vacuum/boost leak at the LIM gasket. It literally deformed it's way into the runner causing a huge leak. Installed a stock metal reenforced 20b gasket all problems solved. The UIM to LIM gasket did not have the same issue, I am guessing the LIM to block is just too hot. After discovering this, I took the LIM off our 13B-RE single turbo, it was developing the exact same issue.

Ouch. That sucks. I guess it makes sense since they're probably not really meant for apps like ours where the intake manifold is literally inches from a red hot exhaust manifold. Guess I'll check on mine after I get my engine broken in.

you said this was on a 20b though, so this result might not be typical.
also what brand did you buy? obviously there are a few different brands w/ similar products out there...

I've been concerned about my LIM gasket (I'm running something similar to Theorie) but it held up to last year's abuse...... three track events and DGRR.
I'm running a Turblown LIM heat shield, and I think that's taken the brunt of the thermal abuse in that area so far

Actually the one I'm using is the lower gasket, because I needed something to space my fuel rails apart since they were pressing against each other and this did the trick. Hopefully it doesn't do to me what it did to Banzai. I think I'm going to have some spacers made out of aluminum or something just to be safe, and then use a stock gasket on each side.
I put red RTV on each side of this gasket and it's working now, sealed it up so far, I haven't had it on the road yet though so we'll see what happens haha.
I didn't even realize they made a phenolic gasket for the top of the LIM.

It is pretty easy to inspect. Just look at the area where the LIM meets the block, if the gasket is still straight then there probably is not a problem. However if it has started to curve toward the block in the pockets between the runners, then problems are soon to follow.
Both our 20B and 13b-re had this same issue. Both cars are equipped with turbo blankets, heat wrapped downpipes and ceramic coated manifolds. All of this on custom turbo systems specifically designed to move the turbine housing forward of the LIM to reduce heat in that area.
I am suspicious that this gasket material may be weakened when it comes in contact with fuel. This is just a theory based solely on the UIM gasket being in great shape. It is also possible that the heat generated by the block is just too much for the LIM gasket to handle. I still have the failed 20B LIM gasket I may spray a little fuel on it and see if it effects it.
Needless to say we will not use them in any applications.

Did a little test this morning. Hit the gasket for 30 seconds with a heat gun, which brought the material up to 236F (laser reading), far below the temps in the engine bay above the exhaust manifold. At this point it became very pliable and I was able to twist it, then allow it to cool down and it would maintain the twist.
Basically you can torque these gaskets to spec, heat them up, they will become pliable. At this point they will become thinner at the areas that are compressed by the LIM. Which will cause a number of problems mainly boost/vacuum leaks and a improperly torqued LIM.
I would suggest anyone using these types of gaskets, inspect them for deformation and check your LIM bolts to see if they are still tight.

We have contacted him/them about the failure of the 20B LIM gasket, got no response. However it appears they have stopped offering it. They do still sell the 13B-re gaskets that failed the same way.
I do not know if all the gaskets are the same material. I do now that we will not be using any that are not OEM. Like I said, I figured I would give them a try. We tested them on our own cars, like we do all new products, they failed miserably, we will not recommend them to any of our customers.

OK, so I THOUGHT I fixed the air leak. As it turns out this gasket won't work no matter what I do. I took a couple pics, maybe you can see the problem from the first pic.
Yeah, it doesn't go all the way down on the front end of it to fully cover a hole it needs to cover. So I will be looking for a machine shop tomorrow to make some LIM spacers for me.

Speed of light had made a set of these types of gaskets for his build. I think he has pictures on the forum somewhere. He is an engineer with a machine shop so he picked the correct materials to use. He made some for the LIM, UIM, TB. Made a huge difference in temp transferal according to him.
