Actually you could get the R-1 with any of the options available. Just as you could put the R-1 options on a touring or a base. While it's not typical it was more than possible. I really love all the post and opinions from owners with so few post LOL

The formula for an FD restoration is as follows (By Nathan Monk):
X = [H2-P] (must be positive number, or project will end up incomplete and sold as is
(FD*L) = [X((C1-((M2-PFD)+(H1/T1)))+(T2*M1))/ (C2/((H2+T3)P))]/L
Terms:
FD = Finished Project
PFD = Project FD that you get for cheap
T1 = Time (free time to work on the car)
T2 = Time (in relation to calendar time)
T3 = Time (in relation to how much longer it will actually take)
M1 = Money (used in relation to T2 to account for additional funds becoming available over time))
M2 = Money (in respect to initial investment)
H1 = Heart/Desire (to start)
H2 = Heart/Desire (to finish)
P = Persistence/Patience (to keep going when 20 things **** you off or you find yet another thing you want to replace for sake of perfection/reliability... or because it is easy now, but tons more work later)
C1 = Overall Expected Cost
C2 = Overall Actual Cost
L = How much You will Love your RX7 when finished

I concur with Goodfella but Recommend the following:
1. Take down the license plate number and call your local Division of Moter Vehicles (DMV) or whatewver organization handles vehicle registration. See if they can give you the name, address and phone number of the individual who last owned the car. Contact him find out what was wrong with the car and why he sold it.
2. Continue to try to contact the owner of the junk yard. Get inside and look the car over carefully.
3. If the car is sound ie. no to little water damage, frame is not bent, etc...THEN BUY THE DAM THING BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE A GREAT PROJECT AND ONCE COMPLETED WILL BE A SUPER CAR TO GET BACK ON THE ROAD!!!
It might cost you some bucks, but if you can buy ther car for $1- 2,000 or less, you can probably get it running for less than $10,000 - depending on what's wrong with it.
Best of luck in your search,. Let us know what you find!!

I'm still trying to get a hold of this guy, I'm getting eager to see this close up. The interiors look cool on these cars, quite unlike the car I'm driving now...

Basically, if you're going to start this, start it as a project for a car that will be really nice to own and not as a project to rebuild something that you will make money off of. If you're planning on selling it within the next 5 years, I would advise against getting an RX-7 no matter what the condition.

OK, got tired of waiting, so I went back at night, hosing rain, camera started fogging up, so didn't get any decent pics. The car was moved, closer to the fence, musta used a forklift to move it. I'd like to see what the driver's side looks like still, and I would think the trunk would have to have water in it. I left a note in a ziplock bag on the fence and shop door, just to see if he'd sell it dirt cheap, but havent heard anything back yet.

honestly, i'd be all over that
there is plenty of information on this forum to guide you through everything you would need to do to get that car on the road
if there is one thing we are good at it is getting a F*ed up car back into immaculate shape
SAVE THE FD PROJECT this shall be named!!
